(CNSNews.com) – As a candidate for president,
Barack Obama decried the financial toll that the Iraq war was taking on the economy, but Obama’s proposed
spending on welfare through 2010 will eclipse Bush’s war spending by more than $260 billion.
“Because of the Bush-McCain policies, our debt has ballooned,” then-Sen. Barack Obama told a Charleston, W.V., crowd in March 2008. “This is creating problems in our fragile economy. And that kind of debt also places an unfair burden on our children and grandchildren, who will have to repay it.”
During the entire administration of George W. Bush, the Iraq war cost a total of $622 billion, according to the Congressional Research Service.
President Obama’s welfare spending will reach $888 billion in a single fiscal year--2010--more than the Bush administration spent on war in Iraq from the first “shock and awe” attack in 2003 until Bush left office in January.
Obama’s spending proposals call for the largest increases in welfare benefits in U.S. history, according to a report by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. This will lead to a spending total of $10.3 trillion over the next decade on various welfare programs. These include cash payments, food, housing, Medicaid and various social services for low-income Americans and those at 200 percent of the poverty level, or $44,000 for a family of four. Among that total, $7.5 trillion will be federal money and $2.8 trillion will be federally mandated state expenditures.

And still there was no positive effect on the economy....

Yeah, it's so much better to spend money and lives on a pointless war than it is to spend money helping the most vulnerable citizens of our own country survive the worst recession since the depression.
http://costofwar.com/And of COURSE the only reason we would spend money helping our own citizens survive the recession is to "help the economy".

Why would anyone try to make a point by quoting a 2009 article that was talking about projections for 2010?

You really need to be more careful about the symbols you type into your computer. If you don't get the symbols right, your program wouldn't run.
What you should have typed into your computer is:
Obama proposed to spend more on welfare in one year than entire Iraq war to date.
See how it works?

And yet the myth persists that defense spending and taxcuts for a handful of people in the highest income bracket are responsible for the national deficit. Even some democrats admit that this country has a spending problem, not a revenue problem.

What this country had was a big ass recession problem.
We might be pulling out of it.
We would have pulled out of it faster, and I would not have had to use the word "might" in the prior sentence, if the stimulus had been larger. But some Republicans in the House were so negative towards a bigger figure Obama didn't dare propose it.
The deficit is starting to shrink, so now would be an excellent time to pass tax cuts to further stimulate consumer spending, starting with those in the lowest income categories.
If the recovery continues without too many hickups for the rest of 2013, 2014 will indeed be the time to look at serious spending cuts. Starting with the military which by then we will be out of the worst part of the 2 most recent wars.
If this happens, I predict that by 2016 the economy will be booming but with inflation in check. The only question then will be, who will be the next president, Hillary or Biden.
Steady as she goes.

Agreed, unless the republicans suceed in screwing things up by continually playing games with the debt ceiling. That could derail the recovery.

And again...
How does a president manage to spend "more" on anything on his own? No president can spend a dime without Congress first allocating the money.

What happens if the House of Representatives doesn't approve raising the debt ceiling? Are you saying the president can't just sell treasury bonds or print more money on his own?

No he can't.
