Could it happen NOW?

I'm currently reading the book Five Chiefs by Justice John Paul Stevens. John Paul (who would later go on to form the Beatles and then become Pope) recollects the 5 Chief Justices under whom he clerked, practiced law, and ultimately with whom he served.
When I was reading about Earl Warren, I stopped and reflected upon two incidents:
1. Earl Warren was elected Governor of California in 1942 as a Republican. In 1946 he ran unopposed. Not only did both the Democratic and Progressive parties NOT field a candidate, they named Republican Warren as their candidate.
2. Eisenhower elevated Warren to Chief Justice as a recess appointment.
A candidate for Governor or California running unopposed? The Chief Justice appointed during a Congressional recess? A real-life liberal Republican? Which will happen next?
