I love this little gem. Glenn Beck loves Cleon Skousen, and after reading A Personal Search for the Meaning of the Atonement you will too. In PSMA we learn how God actually created the earth, where God gets His power and authority, and the shocking truth that God Himself walks on a “razor’s edge” and can even cease to be God by disobedience. We also learn why the atonement was really necessary. You can order this from Deseret Book Here or read it for free in its entirety here:

For those of you unfamiliar with Cleon Skousen, he was a professor of religion at BYU from 1951 to 1955 and also from 1967 to 1978. He was also heavily involved in politics, law enforcement, think tanks and anti-communists efforts (whatever that means). Recently, political commentator Glenn Beck began promoting Cleon’s book, “The 5,000 Year Leap” on his show, describing it as "divinely inspired". Even Texas Governor Rick Perry has been promoting the book recently.

PSMA in a nutshell, shows us scripturally that every atom in the universe has intelligence and can choose to obey. God has power only because the atoms choose to obey Him because of His righteousness. If God strays a little then He will lose his power and authority because the atoms will not obey an unrighteous individual. All miracles in the scriptures or in our personal life, are actually atoms obeying God. Cleon tells us that he learned these great Gospel truths through several personal discussions with the Apostle, John Widtsoe.

There is a scientific basis for all miracles. Once you have the atoms on your side, a God can do anything. Create a world, no problem. Just order the atoms to create a world with oxygen, water or whatever you desire. Cure leprosy, no problem. Just tell the atoms to rearrange into a healthy body without leprosy. Part the red sea, no problem. Just tell the atoms to split (no pun intended). Cure the blind, no problem. Just order the atoms in the eye to work properly. All of the miracles in the scriputures are nothing more than atoms obeying God or His authority. We also learn that it is the the same with the Priesthood today. If a man with the Priesthood is righteous and obedient, then the atoms will listen to his bidding.

Every wonder why the Atonement was necessary in the first place? Well wonder no more. From PSMA, we learn that the Atonement was necessary and that Jesus had to be a perfect individual so that the atoms would obey Jesus when he pleads on our behalf to obtain exalted bodies and be resurrected. It is explained that the atoms must give us our glorified bodies not for our sake, (because we are all sinners), but for Jesus’ sake because He was perfect and the atoms must obey a perfect individual.

This is a must have for any serious scholar of Mormon Studies. No collection would be complete without this and the Kolob Theorem. Books like these go a long way in dispelling the myths that Mormons are strange and have peculiar beliefs.

I listened to the tape version on my mission with Skousen moved to tears as he narrated Jesus's pleading with the father and the subsequent compassion the elements felt for his suffering. Also memorable was his lecture making light of science, which makes things work by force, which is so primative in comparison to the priesthood where God "talks to" the elements. Let's face it, you can't live in a more thoroughly libertarian universe than Skousen's. I give him credit though because in my estimation, this theory is a solid, Chapel Mormon theory. At least it ventures a real contribution from revelation.

I'm really glad to see my colleagues helping to demonstrate what real, legitimate academic book reviews are supposed to look like. Kudos!
