Very cool. Mindfulness is a big part of dialectical behavioral therapy. My daily mindfulness exercises have been a godsend. Thank you for sharing this.

You're very welcome.

by the way, and off-topic, I seem to recall you were a musician, and also had some great suggestions on bands outside of the mainstream. Still making music? Any new bands you'd recommend?

I haven't been in a band or stepped into a studio in a few years. Got a little burnt out on it, but that tends to happen every once-in-a-while (I've been starting to get the itch again, so I imagine I'll get back to creating soon).

I haven't really been plugged into what new groups there are; sorry. What genre(s) are you into, and maybe I can suggest one of the older-but-still-goodies?

Hey Steuss,

I don't have a genre. My dislikes are easier to name: polka music. I've never found an appreciation of it in any of it's forms. Whether european, hispanic, or hillbillie I don't like polka. Otherwise, I'll give anything a listen.

Well, some albums off the top of my head that I know are currently in my playlist (not all of them are really out of the mainstream, but if you haven't heard them before, they are probably worth a listen):

Bright Eyes - Lifted or The Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground.

The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin. I had to listen to this album a few times before it grew on me, but I'm glad I did. If you enjoy this ablum, check out Mercury Rev's album All Is Dream.

The Budos Band - The Budos Band. Probably my favorite Afrobeat group of all time.

Fiona Apple - When the Pawn.

The Beta Band - Hot Shots II. If you've seen the movie "High Fidelity," then you've heard this band before (there's a scene where the main character says: "I will now sell five copies of The Three E.P.'s by The Beta Band" and then plays one of their songs).

Vic Dickenson - The Essential Vic Dickenson. Just some good background jazz (this was one of the albums I used for my sister's wedding reception when I DJ'd it for her).

The Bad Plus - The Bad Plus. Modern jazz group. This album of theirs is made up of fantastic jazz covers of modern songs.

Arcade Fire - Funeral

Badly Drawn Boy - Have You Fed The Fish?. If you’ve ever seen the movie “About A Boy,” this is the guy that composed that soundtrack (the soundtrack is also worth getting).

Gomez - Bring It On. I don’t know that there’s any one album by them that I like all of the songs on, but this album has a couple of groovy ones.

Menomena - Friend & Foe. This band’s creative process is really interesting. They basically just go around in a circle adding instruments via a looping program.

Travis - The Invisible Band.

Rufus Wainwright - Poses. Not much to say, other than this guy has an incredible voice.

Sorry, that was probably a lot more than you were looking for. Once I get going on recommending music, it’s hard for me to stop.
