Good question! I was born not too far from there, but I can only guess why. It's known (I think) as both a working class town (industrial revolution) and a college town. Maybe it's the mix.
English kids are mad about music. Manchester kids are even more mad. I have a cousin that teaches at Manchester University. She's mad about music, as well.

Quasimodo,
Do you still live in England?
You should watch a movie called "24 Hour Party People". It's a GREAT movie about the Manchester music scene in the 1990's.

Bee Gees (yes, the Bee Gees)
Well...the Bee Gees were actually born on the Isle of Man, moved to Manchester, then emigrated to Australia in '58. (I know, picky, picky...)

No. I moved to Salt lake City with my family when I was just a kid. One of the very few non-Mormon related emigrations at that time (hence my interest in this board). I now live in Southern California.
I haven't seen that movie, but I will look for it. I loved "The Commitments". Same sort of thing (I think) about an Irish band in Dublin.

The Commitments was a great movie. Glad to see you're living in sunny Southern California.
Maybe you and Robert D. Crockett should have lunch together sometime!

These are all great bands you've listed, here Wang. I'd like to also add a relatively little-known but incredibly competent band from Manchester known simply as "James". If you've never heard of them, I encourage you to give them a try.

I can't believe I left off JAMES!!!
One of the greatest, if not the greatest band of all time.
I saw them when they finally came to SLC in 2011. It was a spiritual experience. The venue sucked and the lead singer Tim Booth actually had to break up a fight himself because there was no security.
JAMES = pure awesomeness!
