From the story:

In a letter of Feb. 7, 1964, addressed to Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, an outraged parent (name withheld) exclaims, “My daughter brought home a record of ‘Louie Louie’ and I, after reading that the record had been banned from being played on the air because it was obscene, proceeded to try to decipher the jumble of words. The lyrics are so filthy that I can-not enclose them in this letter.”

So began a two-year investigation by the FBI, who to this day is involved in fighting obscenity. According to the FBI case file, The Kingmen’s record was sent to the FBI Laboratory for analysis to “determine its obscene character,” in part by playing the 45 rpm single at the slower speed of 33 1/3 rpm.

Louie, Louie,
me gotta go.
Louie, Louie,
me gotta go.

A fine little girl, she wait for me;
me catch a ship across the sea.
I sailed the ship all alone;
I never think I’ll make it home

Three nights and days we sailed the sea;
me think of girl constantly.
On the ship, I dream she there;
I smell the rose, in her hair.

Me see Jamaica moon above;
It won’t be long me see me love.
Me take her in my arms and then
I tell her I never leave again.

TWO year investigation !
I wonder who the parent was that wrote the letter.

This reminds me of the SBC campaign against ACDC back in the late '70's and early '80's.

As a resident of Washington State at the time, I am proud to say that Louie Louie eventually became the anthem of Seattle and Puget Sound. (The home of the Kingsmen was just down the coast in Portland, OR).

Those who were sure the lyrics were filthy (like my TBM brother) never seemed to be able to actually say what those lyrics were.

I don't recall exactly WHAT I sang back in the day. But I was close. I really hammered the lyrics to The Animals' HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN.

ONE FOOT ON THE PLATFORM
THE OTHER FOOT ON THE TRAIN

Whatever I sang the many times we performed that tune....thems not the words I used. lol

My memory says a group called the Wailers were the source. That was a Washington state group you may remember. I remember seeing hearing them in an old fashioned rock and roll dive when I was a bit too young to should have.

I think the communication is much more in the notes and sound than in the words.

Every body knows what is on their mind just like everybody knows for a song of their parent generation, Glenn Miller's, "In the Mood."

Perhaps it is an age thing but I have no clue whatsoever what might be on the mind of ac/dc.

You are correct. Rockin' Robin Roberts and the Wailers released a version of the song in 1961. However, I doubt that this version would have ever achieved the anthem status that the Kingsmen version eventually did.

You can judge for yourself:

lame non-story

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/ ... ouie-louie

the myth gave this song success and it served the purpose of further fueling the youth rebellion of the time...a rather childish endeavor that ultimately accomplished nothing good for everyone ... except the record seller.

This one got me in trouble once:
Jay Ferguson - Shakedown Cruise

And no, we didn't own a sailboat nor was I found in someone else's sailboat.

Remember also the burning of Beatle records when John Lennon said 'we're more popular than Jesus Christ' in an interview.

Biggest boon to record sales of the Beatles ever as we all had to buy the records again later after the foolishness died down. At the time we were forbidden to play Beatle songs at church dances in Utah.

Even had talks in Sacrament meeting about how evil the Beatles were..., with one High Council member railing on and on about the decline of society/last days evil as shown in 'The Beatles and The Beatnicks".

Every era has its boogymen and most turn out to be foolishness used to control one group or another.
