"Mark Topics Read" doesn't seem to be working correctly

I am new to this board, but have used a wide variety of LDS related and other boards for many years. I am a registered user ("QuestionEverything") although primarily lurking at this point. I sent this via PM to one of the technical moderators, and also by email, but haven't received any response in about a week or two. Thought I'd try to get some input here.
This concerns the fact that at least for me "Mark Topics Read" is not working correctly. I normally mark a forum read when I'm finished perusing it, so at my next visit, I can click the "first unread comment" icon at the left of any given topic to see what has been posted since I last read.
A few observations:
When I click the "Mark Topics Read" link, a window comes up saying that it has done this, but there are still posts that show the small icon on the left to click to go to the first unread message in a variety of threads.
When I do return, and click on the icon to go to the first unread message, it'll either go to the first post in that thread, or to the first message from the previous visit, and sometimes to the correct first unread message. It's just inconsistent and unpredictable.
I access the forum through my Desktop (Google Chrome), Phone (Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Verizon, stock browser), and an Asus Infinity Tablet (Android 4.2.1). Each seems to function independently in this regard, so I can't go seamlessly from one to the other in terms of finding the newest unread messages.
It is just this forum that displays this behavior, so I don't think it's a function of my setup, or anything else on my end. New Order Mormon, Further Light and Knowledge, as well as a variety of technology forums (XDA, various Android forums, etc.) all function properly in terms of marking all messages, read, and later easily going to the newest unread messages, and this behavior remains current and consistent, regardless of which device I use to access these forums.
Is this a known issue with this board, or is there somehow something I need to do differently? It makes it very cumbersome trying to efficiently monitor the various threads that interest me.
Thanks for any insight (as well as for a very entertaining, though sometimes frustrating board) you might have.
(And despite enabling immediate email notification of new posts in the threads where I have participated, I never do receive any email notification).
Thanks.
