For Anyone In Vegas (I Need Socks)

Post by _Doctor Steuss »

My fiancé and I volunteer with a group that helps the homeless and less fortunate in the Las Vegas Valley. The group is completely grassroots, 100% volunteer powered, and doesn’t accept any monetary donations. Each Monday night, we serve between 200-600 less fortunate and homeless individuals by providing a fresh meal, clothes, hygiene items, and employment resources. Also, throughout the week, the organization rescues food that would otherwise be thrown away from bakeries, grocers, distributors, and retailers, to help feed those who are unemployed or underemployed (anywhere between 200-800 families during the week). Our main goal is to get people out of line, and off the streets (we recently got a family of 4 out of the tunnels and into their own apartment).

One item that we are always in desperate need of is socks, and we are hoping to get a bit of a stockpile together if possible before the weather starts cooling off. So, if you are in the Las Vegas area, shoot me a PM and we can set something up for me to pick them up from you (maybe I can buy you a bite to eat as a thank you). Or, if you have some socks that were likely going to become rags, or donated to Goodwill, and wouldn’t mind shipping them my way, it would be very much appreciated. New socks, used socks, even single socks that are missing their match – I’ll gladly accept them and get them to someone who needs them.

Thanks,
Stu

Lived in Vegas for 9 years 5 1/2 years ago..... It's too bad my life was so messed up so never could do other things such as bother with meeting up with you or others.

Ya, Las Vegas with it's year round warmer weather has become a bit of a homeless mecca.
I was intentionally homeless in Reno for about 6 months once to learn and understand the human experience from that perspective.
Of course, I was a clean homeless person. Had a membership at a gym in which I showered and worked out almost every day, and I would work day labor about once a week to get money for the membership and to wash clothes, but I still slept on the streets and ate most of my food about twice a day at the homeless kitchens, mainly two. Had a bike and all my clothes and hygiene in my big green military bag that I put on my back.

Went back to Reno about 4 years ago, and it was dead. No real tourism anymore, some Casino's closed, etc.
And the streets smelled like piss. Liberals taking over that city really made it go to hell.

This was a request for donations, not an invitation to relate (yet again) the details of your life.

Just realized I forgot to mention sizes.

All sizes are needed. The highest demand is men’s, followed by children. We've been getting a lot more kids in line lately -- hopefully that will change gradually now school is back in, and more resources become available to children.

What about mittens and gloves? Can people in Las Vegas use those in winter? I really don't know how cold it gets there?

Most definitely. There's a joke that Vegas has almost 9 months of summer, 3 months of winter, and a day or two of spring and autumn sprinkled in between. Last winter was uncommonly mild (I only wore a coat a handful of times), but it usually gets cold enough to freeze a few nights each year.

There's a local water distribution company that has generously given us use of one of their buildings for storage. This allows us to stockpile all donations of coats, sweaters, blankets, and scarves for when it gets colder.

Okay, thank you.

So....give us more details.

Men's socks--dress socks or work socks?

Children's socks--Are cotton socks okay or do you need heavy socks?

Just regular old cotton crew/athletic socks for the most part. Not much demand for dress socks; however, they would definitely get used too. We keep a small cache of dress clothes to give people for work interviews and new jobs.

Children's socks--Are cotton socks okay or do you need heavy socks?

Cotton socks are perfect. Plain white would allow a little bit of versatility, but one of the biggest smiles I've seen was when a little girl (maybe 5) was given a bag of socks that were pink, purple, HelloKitty (sp?), and low cut with lace at the top.

How about an address? Best if it's not your in real life home. Maybe a large post box or a business address for a company that doesn't mind a few extra boxes being delivered?

I don't have plans to be in Vegas any time soon, but if there is a place that I can send them, the next time I'm in Costco (I practically live there) I will pick some up and pass them along. I think new ones would be best. No one, no matter how desperate, wants my old socks (except maybe Dobby).

What about underwear (those would definitely be new)?
This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.
