The comic book portrayed the villans as being identified with conservatives, a.k.a. the Tea Party etc.

Ldsfaqs knows that all the great super-villains have been conservatives, from Lex Luther to Galactus. Just ask the Sheriff of Nottingham, Snidely Whiplash or Mr. Burns. The choice of masked KKK marauders as a symbol of the Tea Party was inspired. Glad Ldsfaqs spotted it.
