You are presuming that the parents do not support the child's decision. Some will, some won't.
It is better to be a warrior in a garden, than a gardener at war.

Some of us, on the other hand, actually prefer a religion that includes some type of correlation with reality.

Nope. In all cases the parents are unable, and incapable, of providing the necessary support because of their inherent position of apostasy. By default the parents already do not support the church's core doctrine of the family. A doctrine that is the foundation of almost, if not all, teachings and ordinances.
