It's a good little story. Definitely worth a read. Very impressive considering her age. I remember as a city kid being quite surprised they had 'gangs' in Oklahoma

Whoa! I had no idea.
Growing up, whenever it would rain, I would go out in our 1976 Dodge Tradesman (with aftermarket swing-up windows), and read The Outsiders. It's the only time I would read it, and it was the only book I would read on rainy days.
One of the defining books of my adolescence.
Yeah, I loved that book as a teen, myself. I also remember loving That Was Then, This Is Now but can't for the life of me remember what it was about.
My daughter brought The Outsiders home from the school library a few months ago, so I decided to pick it up after all these years because I couldn't remember it very well either. It was a good (short) read, and it made me exceptionally nostalgic.

Agreed. It's not the pinnacle of literature, but given the age of the author and the staying power of the story, I'd say it's pretty darn good.

What grade level would you say it's written for, Miss Tish?

About 7th or 8th would be my guess. It's been a long time since I read it. The narrator is a young teen, 14 or so.

From what I recall, I’d say this is probably spot-on.
I think I read it for the first time in 6th grade. I don't think I really appreciated (or began to enjoy it, for that matter) until about 8th grade.
Okay, thanks, I'll check on it!
(I used to read with my children when they were in elementary. There was one book that I think came from the 3rd grade collection. I can't recall the title but I think it was about a boy tracking a wolf or something. I totally loved it, so I don't mind reading books geared towards a younger audience and I say that as one who read picture books for 30 years!)

I can't wait until my son is old enough for me to start reading things like The Witches and Indian in the Cupboard to him.
