The Practical Politician's Mass Shooting Response Template

Post by _MeDotOrg »

Our hearts go out today to the citizens of [name of town here], and the friends and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this senseless tragedy.

But until we resolve [whatever the shooter's motivation was], we cannot possibly confront the problem of gun violence in the United States. Looking only at guns with respect to the problem of gun violence will only result in partial solutions to the problem of gun violence.

So until we confront [whatever the shooter's motivation was] any talk about regulating guns is just premature. The worst time we can respond to gun violence is in the emotional aftermath of an incident like [name of town here]. And since mass shootings are now happening at a rate where we are always in the emotional aftermath of a mass shooting, now is not the time to talk about gun laws.

Nonsense. Seat belts were invented to help reduce deaths in automobile accidents. They still don't stop the person determined to kill themselves or others.

The Liberal Politicians Mass Shooting Response Template.....

Our hearts go out today to the citizens of [name of town here], and the friends and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this senseless tragedy.

This tragedy makes ever more clear that we must confront the problem of gun violence in the United States. We must look at ways to restrict guns with respect to the problem of gun violence, because if we don't it will only result in partial solutions to the problem of gun violence.

So until we confront [whatever the shooter's motivation was] we must ACT in relation to regulating guns and follow the models of the U.K. and Austrailia (which have near total gun bans). This is the best time to respond to gun violence is in the emotional aftermath of an incident like [name of town here]. And since mass shootings are now happening at a rate where we are always in the emotional aftermath of a mass shooting, now is the time to change the gun laws, not talk about them but change them completely.

MeDotOrg, I think that you've hit the nail on the head.

I would add that ALL political responses are like this. Politicians playing to what their base wants to hear.

And none of them seem to be DOING a god damn thing.

Impotent.

The saddest thing about the OP (which is dead on, by the way) is that we've heard this crap so much, a template is actually required.

This country is in crisis. For the first time in the almost 17 years we've lived in the US, my wife and I have been seriously discussing moving back home. If Bernie doesn't get the nomination, I think we'll likely start making concrete plans.

Oh goodie!

There are now too many "never forget" events to even remember and so many causes to "stand with" that it makes my legs tired.
