Fix me, okay?

Post by _Jersey Girl »

I'm going to make a couple or three statements about guns and I'd like anyone who knows the answers to tell me which are true or false. Don't write a book, I just want quick answers. These have to do with the alternatives to purchasing weapons from gun manufacturers. Thanks!

1. People can buy gun parts from different sources and build their own gun.

2. You can buy gun parts to modify your semi to be auto.

3. A person could fabricate their own gun parts.

1. Possible, but too expensive, when one can just purchase the gun, itself.

2. On some models, all you need is a file.

I don't think you are broken, Jersey Girl, but I'll take a shot (pun intended) at answering your questions.

1. Make it illegal to sell assault weapons AND their parts to any non-military or non-law enforcement organization or person.

2. Those should be illegal, as well.

3. Fabricating guns or gun parts would be very difficult for anyone to do except an expert machinist. If there were high penalties for doing so, I'm guessing that there wouldn't be many that would take the risk.
This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.

How would anyone know if you were doing it?

What equipment would that require?

Not being a machinist, I'm just guessing. I think it would require some very expensive, highly accurate equipment and the space to house it. It would also require the knowledge to use it. I would imagine that building an automatic weapon that works is more difficult than building a 35mm camera from scratch.

If assault weapons were illegal, I would hope that law enforcement would be exhaustive in tracking down the source of any they found.

1. Yes, you can, but the receiver (the actual serial numbered part) is treated as a forearm, and is required to go through an ffl if shipped, just as if it were a full firearm.

2. It's possible, but HIGHLY illegal, unless you have a registered machine gun. The registry closed in 1986, so civilians actually can't legally own any full auto built after that. To buy a transferable (pre-86) full auto, you have to go through a class 3 dealer, pay a $200 tax stamp and wait anywhere from 8 months to a year (last I heard) for the ATF to clear the paperwork before you can take possession.

3. Depends on the part. Actually, a reasonably competent jeweller with a good set of saws and files could make most parts, firearms are actually relatively simple machines.

Yes, to all 3 questions.

Subgenius,

Feel free to produce an example of a homemade assault weapon that didn't rely on parts produced by other manufacturers. I mean, this is easy stuff right? So there must be some an example of one somewhere.
