We don't need Sharia law, we have Hobby Lobby and Kim Davis.

A lot of people try to justify the treatment of women in conservative Islamic countries by saying that women have a cherished place in the household, but I have to admit I'm very Western when it comes to women. I think you can find a pretty strong correlation between women's position in society and the society's health in general. The more oppressed women are, the more violent the men are, and the greater the dichotomy that informs men's views of women as being on unapproachable pedestals or whores.
The previous paragraphs is truly my gut feeling. I have no data to back it up with. But a society that devalues women loses 50% of its potential. Islamic Women are a potential great ally in the war against ISIS and Al Qaeda.

Amazingly
Saudi Arabia held its first elections where women ran for office. This being Saudi Arabia, Women running for office are not allowed to give speeches in front of men; this must be done by their male proxies. I don't think the House of Saud is going to be hosting the VMA awards anytime soon, but it's nice to see a few cracks in the walls.
