I Love My Canadian Heritage!

25,000 hand knit hats for Syrian refugees. Pretty sweet, eh?

That's why Ted Cruz renounced his citizenship. Too many hat giveaways.

I'll bet he looks positively adorable in a tuque.

This is one thing I don't understand about his candidacy. He was born Canadian. I thought that disqualified him for the position. If not, what was the big deal about Obama's birth certificate?

I don't know the exact details. I found one birther group that says he isn't qualified to run for president. I also recall an issue raised about the length of time his mother had lived in the U.S. having some bearing, but I don't know whether that was a real issue.

The same issue was raised by some folks with respect to McCain back in the day. Hilary and Obama co-sponsored a bill stating that McCain was, indeed, a natural born citizen.

You're talking about Obama here, yes?

And if "qualifications" were an issue... well, you know. Who could be president?

If you don't have to be born in the US, that would make more sense, so long as you've naturalized.

That's good to hear. Although he's pissed me off with the things he's said on occasion, overall, I don't mind McCain. I was considering voting for him right up until Palin happened.

Yes, first part was about Obama. The thing is, the opposite of natural born citizen is naturalized citizen. So, if you have to naturalize, you are not eligible to run for president. Cruz was not required to naturalize because his mother was a U.S. citizen when he was born. That makes him a natural born U.S. citizen.

Once caveat: I don't thing the Supreme Court has taken up the details of what constitutes a natural born citizen. I think that's historically been a little too political for them.

My family is all from southern Alberta, and they call 'em tuques. I don't pretend to understand Canadian politics, but I think the opposite of Quebec is Alberta.
