Lol. You perfectionist, you. I understand completely (maybe it's a artist/architect thing).

You must really be down on the cylindrical projection. : )

there is a thin line between accuracy and perfection...as an architect i necessarily strive to stay just this side of perfection
besides, size is important

The Mercator Projection is "tyrannical" to the perception of size?? Hyperbole much?

I like it 'cause it enlarges areas of the map that are difficult to see otherwise.

Notwithstanding your obvious affection for the nautical life, in what ways does the persistent use of a distorted reality in order to maintain an uncompromising position not equate to tyranny? Reality oppressed by the inflexible rules of geometry....conformal projections are the mainstay of making geometry convenient when it naturally exists as inconvenient. This sort of dominion is more akin to stewardship? How so you say

Is Mercator used much anymore? I don't recall seeing that horizontal border between the western U.S. and Canada lately.

Because it isn't a big deal and nobody is getting hurt.

Wait... are you talking about the Mercator projection here, or Fox News' Benghazi reporting? ; )
