You know, the fictional kingdom in Disney's Aladdin.

(It's actually likely primary voters, but still.)

Things like this are why when I travel overseas I tell people I'm Canadian.

Fifty-five percent of Democrats believed the city exists, while only 43 percent of Republicans thought it was real.
Unsurprisingly, few in the media wanted to notice the Democrats’ weaker grasp of Middle East Geography.
The idea for the prank started with a suggestion from Salon’s Amanda Marcotte who, needless to say, was only interested in embarrassing one party:

And when the confederates saw Jackson standing fearless as a stone wall the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

What's embarrassing about the poll is being wiling to bomb a place you've never heard of and don't understand because it sounds Middle Eastern - not that you don't recognize Agrabah is fictional.

What also is embarrassing is Ajax quoting from one of the worst places to get accurate information. Ajax, are you dishonest or did you not read the whole article? If you read the whole article with a little objectivity you should have picked up on the articles dishonesty. There was no question about Agrabah being a real city. They dishonestly took the not sure responses from the question as meaning they knew it did not exist.

6 Fictional Lands We Should Bomb Once We're Done With Agrabah
Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb... Agrabah? While U.S. airstrikes in Syria continue to dominate foreign-policy headlines, the Republican electorate won't so easily forget about another Middle Eastern menace. According to a new poll from Public Policy Polling, 30 percent of Republican voters nationally support bombing Agrabah. Just 13 percent are opposed, while the rest remain unsure.
Agrabah, for the record, is not actually a real country. It's the name of the magical kingdom where the Disney movie Aladdin takes place.
Results of more serious questions from the same poll are too depressing—more than a quarter of Republican voters think Islam should be illegal in America; almost half support the creation of a national database of Muslims; and "looking back," only 49 percent think Japanese internment camps during WWII were a bad idea—so let's just stay in the realm of make believe, shall we? Here's are six more fictional enemies we've got our eye on...
ARENDELLE
Can you really trust a country where women's eyes take up half of their faces and the snow talks?
NARNIA
I don't want to live in a world where we can't even trust our children alone with wardrobes.
LATVERIA
That's a nice isolated European country ruled by a paranoid, evil dictator you've got there. It would be a shame if someone had to force a violent regime change...
THE LAND BEFORE TIME
The great Tyrannosaurus menace must be contained!
CANDYLAND

MORDOR
We will not capitulate to radical Orc extremism.

The wording of the questions makes many people assume this place is a problem and republicans tend to think bombing is a better way to solve a problem. Given that there are only three options we cannot know how many recognized it was the fictional city from Aladdin. It not like most people in the US know the name of every city in the middle east. While not sure is the best response and more republicans choose it, I would say it is only a little more embarrassing for republicans for so many wanting to bomb a place they knew nothing about. Democrats don't get off either, but it is better to oppose bombing a place you know nothing about then favor bombing.

The main reason it's not that much better for Democrats is that 3 in 10 people isn't that many more than 2 in 10 people. The question is worded in such a way that a "no" is ambiguous about knowledge of the respondent. We shouldn't bomb Agrabah because Agrabah doesn't register as a place that needs a bombing (because it is fictional).
What produces this number are two factors at work in polling. The first is that many people don't understand even on a basic level the polling questions they are responding to. They respond based on vague heuristics they possess. The second is that the heuristic in this case involves Democrats being more willing to oppose bombing that Republicans. What the poll is saying is that a huge number of dedicated Republicans and a somewhat smaller group of Democrats currently have a bias in them that says if anyone asks about the need to bomb a Middle Eastern country, that's probably a good idea. They might not know a lot about what is going on, but they know that tough military response to problems "over there" is something they like. This particular question looks worse for Republicans, but you can craft questions to catch Democrats in their biases.
