I wholeheartedly agree with Mark Steyn about the importance of the Western ideal of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. I can't help but agree that Western publications showed abject cowardice in letting themselves be intimidated to not show and publicize the Jyllands Posten cartoons and the Charlie Hebdo cartoons that angered Muslim fanatics. Muslim overreaction such as violence and murder over such things deserves nothing but the strongest, uncompromising and non-apologetic condemnation and ridicule. They have every right to express their objection to and take offense over what is said or printed about them, especially when it is actually unfair or unjust, but they do not have the right to force us to compromise our right to freedom of speech and of the press.

However, I don't agree with Steyn's view of multiculturalism. To me, multiculturalism means nothing more than learning about and embracing what is good and admirable about each of the various cultures of the world. It does not or should not include or imply prohibiting or suppressing speaking our honest opinion about, or even ridiculing what is bad or foolish about these various cultures, including our own. I agree with him only that it is wrong to punish or muzzle someone merely for expressing honest criticism of some aspect of someone else's culture.

However, as to his comments on multi-culturalism, he's talking about the "leftist" version of it, that's primarily promoted by the liberals in power.
The multi-culturalism you speak of is a simple pure good elementary version understanding of it, not the distorted version that the left promotes and does.

There's I'm sure a lot of good videos Youtube explaining what the perverted leftist version of multi-culturalism is if you wish to understand the context of Steyn's statements on that subject.

Steyn wasn't talking about the Elementary School definition of the idea, he was talking about the Leftist political version.
Thus, that means there wasn't any sort of "countering" occuring at all. If you don't know what Multi-culturalism in the Leftist political sense is, then you need to get educated.

That rationalization comes of course through mass media marketing (otherwise called the News) sponsored by the military-industrial complex. It also comes from stump speeches of politicians whose power derives in part from inciting fear in the masses of some external enemy. It also comes from the lukewarm justification of wrapping oneself in whatever flag one deems can somehow justify ongoing bloodshed.
