"Today, as you know, I am famous, I am rich. But when I am alone with myself, I haven't the courage to consider myself an artist in the ancient sense of the word. Great painters are people like Giotto, Titian, Rembrandt, Goya. I am only a public entertainer who has understood the times and has exploited as best he could the imbecility, the vanity and the greed of his contemporaries. Mine is a bitter confession, more painful than might seem, but it has the merit of being sincere."
Picasso didn't seem to find it hard to fault himself.
I happen to agree with everything he said in the above. His work was a mockery of art. On a technical level so much of it of it looked like grade school scribbles, yet so much of his work shows a greater talent.
Considering the above quote, it is hard to disagree.
Was he criticizing modern art, the public's growing disinterest in fine arts, or both?
Either way, it was a very conscious effort made by a man who had great technical talent, but rarely applied it.
PS. I often think of what I'd do with a time machine. Mostly I'd assassinate musicians that have polluted my airspace for too long. I have a list. Elvis would be number one, if it weren't for the fact that he inspired the Beatles. Michael Jackson would be his replacement if he weren't so instrumental in Weird Al's career. I'm pretty sure that puts Fallout Boy, or maybe Imagine Dragons next in line.
I digress.
I'm not sure if Picasso or Warhol would take the number one spot for pop artists.
I think Picasso wins, because the far more talented, crazy and visceral Dali could produce better proteges.

I'm an illustrator. I don't consider myself an artist. I do know that many great artists were self conscious and doubtful of their own talent. I think that is how one gets to be a great artist. Once one starts to think of himself as great, one stops improving.
I was of two minds about Picasso until I saw an exhibition of his work from his childhood to his latest works at the Norton Simon museum.
As a young boy he was amazing.

He painted this portrait of his mother when he was 15.
I think he spent most of his life exploring what the true meaning of art was.

Thanks Jersey Girl! That sounds like my pal Pablo. He was a genius in many ways (hard to live with, I hear).
Here's one of my favorite quotes from him.
“When art critics get together they talk about Form and Structure and Meaning. When artists get together they talk about where you can buy cheap turpentine.”
