I've been battling some gnarly stuff since before Thanksgiving. I've done a round of Amoxicillin (which did clear up the sinus part), and I've done a round of Clarithromycin (which didn't really improve anything). I've been prescribed several different types of cough suppressants, and an Albuterol inhaler.
Nothing seems to have helped. I have coughed so hard that I have pulled a groin muscle (at least I hope it’s that and not a hernia), and either torn an intercostal muscle or fractured a rib (there’s slight bruising in the area on my left side, and it hurts like the dickens).
Kind of at my wit's end right now on how to get some relief from this cough. So, I'm ready to turn to juju magic folk fun. Momma bear has already given me some DoTerra crap ("On Guard" and Peppermint oils). I sleep with a humidifier with several ounces of silver in the reservoir.
What are some of your tricks for relieving a cough?

Some nice Jewish penicillin (chicken soup).
It contains the amino acid cysteine. This compound is similar to acetylcysteine, which doctors prescribe for patients with bronchitis and respiratory infections to help them hork up all that crap in their chest.

Put a towel over your head over boiling water, and you can put honey and lemon in the water also, this works good among other things for clearing out congestion etc. Also drink warm water with honey and lemon. That kind is also the best cough drops to use.

I didn't know that about cystine. Very cool. I normally supplement with about 50 grams of whey isolate (which, looking at the amino profile, has about a gram of cystine in it), but I haven't been using it since I haven't been able to go to the gym.
I'll start having a shake a day again -- and get me some of that Jewish penicillin (just so happens, my wifey is Jewish on her mom's side

I've tried the towel and boiling water thing, with honey, lemon, and a big glob of Vic's. Seemed to work for a few minutes, but then would aggravate the cough (without producing phlegm).
Hadn’t thought of drinking honey water though. Doesn’t seem to matter how many times I’m reminded of the antiseptic qualities of honey… I always manage to forget.
Thank you.

Oh, and try to get local organic honey.....
It's usually the best for various reasons I won't get into here.
Such has been shown to be effective for allergies and such also.

I fortunately have a big jar that someone in my parent's ward gave me for Christmas from their hives just outside the valley. I was kind of out of it when they dropped it off (I can only get about 2-3 hours of sleep at a time with this crap), but I think they said it would help my seasonal allergies.
It sucks that I don't like the taste of honey, lol.
Edit:
Just saw your addition about allergies. Guess I wasn't completely out of it, and remembered correctly what they said.

If the cough is related to post-nasal drip, I've found mucinex works great, it's now available in pretty inexpensive generic form, called guafenisen.

It maybe outside your range of acceptability, but anything with a good dose of alcohol will relieve a cough temporarily. Long enough to get some sleep.
