23 and me
My wife and I just submitted "spit" (a generous amount) for the 23andMe genetic testing and cataloging - anyone else use this service or something similar?

Re: 23 and me
I just submitted an AncestryDNA test last week. Been wanting to do it for years.
I looked at 23 & Me, but it was a lot more expensive than the AncestryDNA kit.

Mine came back "Nephite", I've requested a second opinion.

I'm guessing you are only 10% from the loins of Nephi. The rest is divided between Angles and Saxons (maybe a little Welsh and Danish mixed in). Do you ever feel a need to sing in harmony or raid small coastal villages?
This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.

I submitted to Ancestry. Their commercial shows a guy who trades his Leiderhosen for a kilt. I know have a significant amount of Scottish and German but they couldn't distinguish anything for me. It just said 80% Western European, 6% Scandinavian, 6% Irish, and 8% possibly Iberian peninsula. Scottish, Dutch, Lombard, Angle, Saxon, Frank... It was all the same to Ancestry DNA. It didn't really tell me anything that I didn't already know through genealogy.
And when the confederates saw Jackson standing fearless as a stone wall the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

Maybe it's best not to know the details. I always worry that a strong line of conservatives will show up in my ancestry.
Honestly, it might be interesting to find out a few things. My dad had Dupuytren's Contracture, a condition that affects palm tendons (I am starting to develope it, as well). It's called the Viking disease because it is mostly seen in people from Nordic countries. My dad was born in Wales, so that was puzzling. I did some research and found that the little town he came from was once a Viking settlement.
Interesting stuff!

Yes, it is more expensive but it seems to provide more than just ancestry information - like health, other genetic traits etc. Plus my wife was drawn to the ability to download the raw data from the samples.
Was your interest purely genealogical?

Did that company not offer any additional genetic information?
23andMe seem quite extensive in what they provide.
