Maybe it's best not to know the details. I always worry that a strong line of conservatives will show up in my ancestry.

Honestly, it might be interesting to find out a few things. My dad had Dupuytren's Contracture, a condition that affects palm tendons (I am starting to develope it, as well). It's called the Viking disease because it is mostly seen in people from Nordic countries. My dad was born in Wales, so that was puzzling. I did some research and found that the little town he came from was once a Viking settlement.

Interesting stuff!

Bill Nighy has it. If you look you can always see it when he's on film.

Bill Nighy is a great actor (one of the best). I'm tickled we share a genetic disease. I'll watch for it.

Are you going to watch the new season of Vikings on the history channel? Everyone thought I'd have Viking ancestry because of my height, but I don't have much. How tall are you Quasimodo?
And when the confederates saw Jackson standing fearless as a stone wall the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

Gosh, I am unaware of the Viking series. That tells you how out of touch I am, these days. I will look it up.

I am 6 foot even. A bit more with a thick pair of socks.

How does that stack up on the Viking scale?

That seems a little short for a Viking. I always thought of the Vikings as towering over the Scots, Picts, and Welsh. Anglo Saxons seemed a little taller but were they as big as the Vikings? It's hard to get good information on this subject. I wonder how distinct the Vikings looked from the people on the British Isles when they first sailed/raided there. Were they as distinct as different races of people are today?

The Romans seemed rather diminutive compared to the northern European tribes they conquered. That seems odd since they were probably better fed. But when you look at the seats in the coliseum nobody today would fit in one. They were tiny.

You made me curious, so I did a little Googling. It seems that Vikings averaged about 5 foot 9. Taller than most Europeans at the time, but certainly not giants. I might have fitted in well.

Romans were pretty short. Averaging about 5' 5 in those days. Italians are still pretty short by modern standards. About 5' 7.

Was your interest purely genealogical?

Yes and no. I know very little about my own ancestry. My grandparents are all dead, my mother is dead, and my father isn't particularly helpful.

So, as long as AncestryDNA tells me something, it will be more than I already know.

I'm sure you would have. I'm amazed at what the Vikings accomplished in their ships without modern technology. Imagine trying to use a sunstone to find your way across the ocean. Perhaps you should change your avatar to Odin rather than that gypsy Quasimodo.

I had mine done at Ancestry. Thought I was Scottish, Dutch and German. I have all of those, but my biggest component was Scandinavian, a bit of a surprise. Maybe the result a happy assignation in one of the Coastal Village Raids to which Quasi was referring... ;-)
