Ted Cruz is hated, simply hated, by a very large group of Republican leaders. I don't understand why exactly and there's no definitive reporting out that explains it. Rumor has it that he is a massive, massive tool in person. And he's willing to kneecap Republican party politics for his personal interests. But I'm still skeptical this is enough to cause him to be as hated as he is. Yet here we are. It's pretty clear that the Republican establishment probably will align itself with Trump over Cruz if it is forced to pick. Imagine the amount of contempt Cruz must've earned to make Trump a preferable option to him.

Cruz is hated for a few reasons. It's mainly the Senate when it comes to leadership what we call "establishment Republicans" a.k.a. RINOS, and some general big donors are because they are social conservatives, meaning liberal in social issues. The establishment republicans hate him because they are often to liberal for our tastes, and Cruz is a conservative in every way and Constitutionalist, whereas the establishment likes to dole out the money and not actually stand by conservative principles instead compromising them often in the name of "getting along". And so Cruz when he operates, he does the job as it mostly should and can be done, thus the establishment rino's don't like it, being used to doing things their way, pork pork pork, compromise compromise. Cruz is also a strong Christian and the rino's don't like that either like I said being more liberal leaning on social issues.

The establishment seems to be thus supporting Rubio because of all these things. He can be controlled, he's not a true blue conservative, is more liberal on social issues, etc.

This is talked about a lot out there on talk radio and other fully/nearthereto conservatives proponents.

Some of the "Establishment Republicans" are supporting Rubio over Cruz mainly because Rubio has a chance at winning the general election while Cruz doesn't. And I don't believe that Rubio is really "more liberal" on social issues than Cruz.
Senator Rubio got a 100% rating from the National Right to Life Committee during the 112th Congress and also a 100% rating during the 113th Congress.
