The privatization of the prison system is a Republican initiative more than anything. Couple that with conservative judges in bed with companies running these prisons and you're seeing inmates maxing out their time served because it's good for the bottom line.

I liked the part where he said (paraphrasing from memory), "I don't belong with the guys in prison, I'm not a criminal!" Isn't that what basically everybody in prison says?

The thoroughly Republican war cry of "Get tough on crime!" is the reason the prisons are so full. The "war on drugs" is a huge part of it--using and selling drugs are inherently non-criminal things and behaviors. It's people doing what they want to do with their own bodies, and people helping others get what they want through capitalism. Throwing people into jail for selling and using cocaine isn't inherently different than throwing them into jail for selling and using coca cola.

Ditto immigration. Coming to America to work is an inherently non-criminal thing and behavior. Yet Republicans want such a thing to be criminalized based upon the technicality of whether or not your papers are in order. Talk about fascism!
