An interesting, albeit simplified (and self acknowledgedly so) discussion.

As usual, I have no time to personally engage with the ideas presented here, but the article's take may be of interest to others in the way it frames the discussion of "subjective" and the film's POV. It makes me think of a similar, yet radically different, treatment of these issues in relation to representations of the Holocaust in Ariel Dorfman's novel Hard Rain.

Thank you for sharing this. It was very interesting, and a nice thoughtful approach to understanding the significance of the movie.

The material in Your link mentions Imre Kertész, with another Holocaust theme... It is not only about the Hungarianness (is there such word?) of the authors. It is about killing certain humans, for their ancestry (colour, root, derivation, any discrimination).

I used to visit in Terezin, Auschwitz and Buchenwald.
The last one is something to expound.
Year by year, I drive to Freiberg, Germany temple with my wife and her two womenfriend (I should say girlfriends... forget it... ). The weekends before and after are for excursions.

There was a significant case in Weimar (Goethe, Schiller, Liszt) and in Buchenwald.

Ouch, dig it in deeper and twist it, too? Man.

Son of Saul is to pop culture as a fine red wine is to junk food.

To be fair, there is a TV show called "Better Call Saul". Since this is probably the first time in history there has been both a movie and TV show with the word "Saul" in the title released at the same time, you can probably cut him a little slack.

Maybe. If his Google was broken.

That, and I think part of this is the whole foreign film thing. Not having heard of the Best Foreign Film winner after it won the Oscar is a different kind of cultural blind spot that deserves a bit of razzing in it's own right. Not being willing to type, "Son of Saul" into Google, but willing to post about it on a message board? Yeah. He's getting razzed.

I checked on Rotten Tomatoes and "Son of Saul" is playing not too far from here (96% on the tomatometer). I might try to catch it tomorrow.

I would suggest that Shades try to see it as well, but I'm sure it will be in English subtitles and I'm not sure he would want to spend two hours listening to spoken Hungarian.
This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.

Yesterday my wife and our youngest daughter (39 yo...) watched it. (I will watch it when it will be downloaded --- I am that beggar style)

They weren't satisfied with.

Watch it, then evaluate it...
The guys on pulpit did it.
