My wife (in her quest to expand the size of her heart to astronomical proportions, and test the limits of how much stuff our living room can hold) has taken on a group of teenagers as well. The shelter/temp housing they are at is being adopted by a church for Easter, but the church is only doing baskets for the younger kids. Naturally, my wife thought that was something that need to be fixed.
So... what would be some ideas for items to put in baskets for teenagers? We should have a gender breakdown and headcount by Saturday (hopefully), but we want to start moving on wrangling stuff. About all I can think of is notebooks and pens (for drawing or journaling).
Would deoderant, or body spray be weird?
Hmm, teenagers like candy, too. T-shirts? Hair scrunchies and makeup for the girls (check for free samples from manufactures)? Along with your idea for deodorant, maybe travel sized shampoo, soap, tooth paste and brushes? Movie tickets? Socks (if you have any left)?
You and your wife need some sort of award for being wonderful people.
This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.

Ah, yes... candy. :)
I was thinking of diverting some of the glow bracelets from Just Me over to the teenager baskets -- it's hard to think of what I would have liked 19+ years ago, but I think that's something that would be something groovy.
Movie tickets are a good idea. I think there's a discount theater somewhat close by to the temp housing. Will have to check and make sure. I was thinking of the various hygeine stuff, but I'm hoping that the shelter/housing are already providing those items. We don't have any socks left (we gifted all of them over to SHLV, Safe Nest, Las Vegas Rescue Mission, etc.) -- but I'm sure we could score some more fairly easily.

Scrunchies coming. You didn't mention them, but I liked the idea, so I sent them anyway. I figured you could use them somewhere, even if not for baskets. I suspect you will receive much more from from our friends on MDB.
What a guy (and gal)!

Mainly high school aged kids are going to be left behind from the other orginizations baskets. The case manager who is assisting us hasn't gotten back to us with a solid number, and gender breakdown yet.
I'm thinking small games like mini hoop and b ball (my dollar store sells them, ball is about 2inches diameter) might work...
I don't know why, but I am still having the hardest time thinking of things that teenagers might like (well... inexpensive small things, that is).

Steuss,
Is there a teen who comes to your program/outreach who you could ask directly as your advisor?
Can I say something in the hopes that it isn't going to embarrass you or anyone here? I don't think that it will. For the females, could you include feminine hygiene products maybe put them in nice little pink bags for modesty's sake?
I really loved Quasi's idea where he sent the scrunchies. So on the money with that! Could be used by females and males with long hair.

Great idea about feminine hygiene products, Jersey Girl! No embarrassment, it's just that crusty old guys like me don't think about things like that.
