Jesus Christ! ISIS is not our biggest threat

Post by _theldsthinker »

ISIS is a big problem, but we have bigger problems that we ignore

1. Traffic accidents
We can solve that problem by creating self-driving cars, and allowing only self-driving cars.

2. Climate Change
Big problem that everyone ignores, including the Democrats.

3. Poverty, Hunger, and Healthcare
Millions of Americans still don't have healthcare insurance, and their children are hungry.

4. Pandemic disease
We need more medical research to be prepared

5. Chronic disease
We need a war on disease

6. Crime
We need to end the war on Drugs

7. Islamic Terrorism

Number 1 on this list will be a tough sell. And it will make movies like Vanishing Point much less interesting.

My smart phone glitches sometimes, and it isn't a 3,000 lb hunk of metal traveling at 65 mph.

they said the same thing about seat-belts. The day everyone has a self-driving car, it will be the day that traffic accidents will become very rare. We need self-driving cars. Self-driving cars will solve half of all our problems.

"Google’s fleet of self-driving cars has learned this lesson first hand. Its cars have driven in autonomous mode for more than 1 million miles since 2009. In all that time, they’ve been involved in 16 accidents through August—none of which were caused by the self-driving car." - the Atlantic

I think that a Google self-driver just got into an accident a day or two ago that was basically caused by the computer not correctly compensating for a road hazard. But I agree that the self-drivers are probably more prone to be accident-free than cars piloted conventionally by people.

Why I think it's a 'hard sell' is that there will always be a certain number of folks who (1) don't trust the technology, or (2) simply enjoy driving. Mandating that all cars must be self driving will be opposed by those two groups for a number of decades, and that makes full conversion to 'computer only' very unlikely. There will likely always be an optional ability to pilot the car by the human owner, at least in our lifetimes.

They will save thousands of lives a year, and resources.

I agree that it will be a gradual introduction, but that is usual for most new products. Once people get use to it most wont want to drive most of the time.

We are use to some on the list that kill far more then others so we don't think much about them. It is things like Islamic terrorism that kill few Americans we get bent out of shape over. Sure it's a problem that needs some attention, but there are other problems that hurt the US far more. The other problem is that much of the attention Islamic terrorism gets is making things worse. Invasion of Iraq was one of the biggest mistakes the US has ever made. Trump is already making the world a worse place today.
