There is no "the South" anymore than there is a "the West" or "the East". These are large regions with complex populations. Most differences between people relate to ethnicity and whether they live in urban or rural environments.

Yeah, no kidding. When I was hiking through the South almost every convenience store or hotel was ran by Southeast Asians. Mexicans fill almost all the factory jobs (my girls' soccer coach worked in a local chicken processing plant). You're just as likely to have an Asian doctor as you are a White one. You see the vestiges of the Old South, but the reality is it's very cosmopolitan throughout.

I don't think it's a messaging problem from Bernie, except that his message hasn't really penetrated the South. I've heard several African Americans say things like, "I voted for Hillary because I know who she is. Who's Bernie Sanders?"

He may have spent a bit too much time up north to win NH.

I think it's a combination of the Sanders campaign strategy and Hillary's name recognition. It also may be something about Hillary's delivery that plays better with AA votes than Bernie's delivery does (but I'm speculating big time there. I don't mind Hillary's conversational delivery, but her speech/debate delivery leaves a ton to be desired).

I'm sure there's some of that too. There would also be those who didn't bother to research Bernie because they'd already decided it was Clinton's turn, or that her nomination was inevitable. There is no "one size fits all" answer to your question.

But if I were to name what I think is the biggest reason, it would be name recognition combined with a lack of time Bernie spent in the South.
