Depressing Stuff from My Mom's Facebook

Post by _Kevin Graham »

She posts crap non stop all night into the wee hours of the morning, one stupid meme of Obama after another. Then anti-immigrant memes attacking Latinos for being criminals, etc. Then this video of cars running over black people in the streets during protests.

What sickens me most is the comments section. She has something like 3,000 Conservative "friends" on Facebook, none of whom she has ever met, and none of them ever stand up to any of the other bigots in the group. This is why I feel I can say Republican party is basically a party of racists and bigots. I mean, you'd think there'd be an occasional voice of reason, right? Wrong. They're all in support of murdering black people with their cars.

Seems like a representative sample of any youtube or yahoo news comments section on any issue that remotely touches the subject of race. This doesn't mean that all conservatives/Republicans are a bunch of racist bigots. It just means that there is a notable subculture of them and they have a strong online presence. Wanting to run over black protesters is something that people are passionate about, apparently.

There's a culture of trolling in there as well. I'd like to believe that this is all just trolls pretending to be vile idiots to one another. But the reality is that, nope, it's mostly legit.

The screenshot doesn't quite capture what is going on. The video in question is a montage of cars running over black protesters that are in roads, impeding the flow of traffic. The commentators, for the most part, clearly are enjoying the fantasy of doing the same.

ETA: I'm skeptical the example the screenshot is showing is actually a protest. I suspect it is just an example of a car running over some black people, spliced into the montage. Other examples may or may not be specifically BLM protests. It's hard to say. It's more about the fantasy of committing violent crimes against racial and/or political enemies in the comments section that matters here.

Indeed. And it's not unique to the right. During the time of Dubya there were sites (I think one called Buzzflash) that had videos of Cheney and Bush and the Swastika, all kinds of over the top stuff. Social media is a "hot" medium and the echo chambers build the crazy quickly and easily.

Sure. This is not a conservative-only phenomenon.

This also not an "a pox upon both their houses" situation. The right unfortunately has a much worse, uglier subculture going on that appears larger and more mainstream than the leftwing equivalent. Enjoying the high of thinking about running over black lives matter protesters is not basically the same thing as sharing a picture of George with. Bush that compares him to the Nazis. Moreover, inappropriate Nazi comparisons are much more a part of mainstream conservative discourse for Obama than they ever were on the other side for Bush.

Not all, but a huge chunk of them. My Mom follows, and is followed by just about every Conservative/Republican Facebook group there is. You see a lot of incestuous posting and sharing, so much so it is sometimes impossible to figure out who posted it first. The point is she didn't join strictly 'extremist' Right Wing groups, and so one might expect the occasional rational voice to speak up whenever her despicable threads occur. But it just never seems to happen.

At the same time, other reasonable folks on the Right will act completely oblivious when I suggest theirs is a party of racism and bigotry. They act like they have no idea how anyone could ever come to that conclusion, all the while they're commiserating with people who post this crap.

I don't think that is a fair comparison. This is not a privately owned website operated by a few, it is a publicly accessible forum for millions of Right Wingers from all over the world to participate. And comparing Cheney and Bush to Hitler is far more apt than gloating about the prospects of mowing down people of color in the streets. "Making America great again," no doubt.

There's in-context Nazi comparisons that make sense within a limited scope and inappropriate comparisons that are simply designed to use our shared cultural connotation of "Nazi=most evil thing ever" to smear someone.

Comparing the Bush administration to Nazis for its use of torture, spying on citizens, etc. is fair game because they are genuinely similar in this regard and those are things that reasonably make up part of why Nazis are viewed so terribly. The Bush admin, like the Nazis, are guilty of war crimes. (Same is true of Obama.) You can make an analogy of that. Comparing Bush to a Nazi usually isn't like that tough. He's more an expression of raw hatred - "Omg. Bush is such a Nazi!"

We just shouldn't equate going Godwin on the topic of Bush with actively fantasizing about committing violent crimes on BLM protesters.

The thing is, those comparing Obama to Hitler are not using war crimes to make their case. They just think they were both Socialists.
