Wow, if that was Butch Otter's opposition running for governor, sheesh, what a shoe-in he was.

The Democrat opponent was not involved in that debate because it sported the two clowns, If I recall correctly. But in Idaho, the -R behind one's name assures he'll win in November.

I'm an Idaho transplant to the East coast.

Yeah, if you're a Republican in Idaho, it almost assures success in politics. Although Frank Church was one of my heroes. And he was a lifelong Democrat. And also a never-Mo!

I lived down the street from a home Frank and Bethany Church lived in (or was it her parents home?) during my undergrad years at Boise State U. Their family attended a Methodist church in my neighborhood.

When he died I was still in Boise, and went to his wake at the capitol rotunda. It was a sad and solemn day in Idaho history, because he was so beloved. There's an entire section dedicated to his holdings at BSU library to house his records and writings.

I always felt a close affinity to him for some odd reason. Plus, I majored in Political Science, which may have added to that sense - although instead of working for his office I actually volunteered for Larry Craig, a Republican Congressman, turned Senator.

Funny you should mention Larry Craig, I met him in a men's room at the Minneapolis Airport ;-)

When I worked for him he was in the news for a scandal with the Congressional pages in Washington, along with some other Congressmen during the 1980's. He was able to weasel out of those homosexual charges (he being a conservative straight-laced WASP representing the Bible belt in Idaho.) Soon after that he married a divorcee named Suzanne, with a ready made family to call his own. It took the spotlight off him and charges he was a homosexual. He was in fact, living a lie, as a closet gay.

Suzanne got a sweet deal out of the arranged marriage of convenience, and it was while married to her he had his bathroom arrest in Minneapolis playing footsie with a plain clothes policeman. He went incognito soon after his arrest, and basically resigned his Senate seat (did not seek another term despite being an incumbent of consecutive terms.)

Served him right, he finally got busted. Others came forward to say he'd done the same in restrooms in Virginia and DC near where he went to work in the Capitol. He really was a swinger!

I did not know about Craig's previous history, or the fact that people knew that his was a marriage of convenience. Larry Craig was easy joke (sometimes I go for the low-hanging fruit, sorry, can't help myself) but I really have mixed feelings about the man. On the one hand, an incredible hypocrite. On the other, a human being who lived his entire life as a lie. I would imagine the golden years of retirement are not a happy thought for Senator Craig.
