Gunnar wrote:Perhaps the criticism of them for mentioning her jewelry line in her biography is a bit overblown, but there are plenty of other things that Trump has done in the past or has promised to do that are far from admirable or benign. I just don't trust the man! I will grant that his advocacy of abolishing the prohibition against negotiating with pharmaceutical companies for better drug prices is promising. If Congress manages to pass a bill to accomplish that and he signs it, he will deserve kudos for that. I hope that public pressure from the public, scientific community and his daughter Ivanka will get him to seriously reconsider his opposition to addressing the problems of climate change and reducing CO2 emissions, but so far, there seems little hope of that, considering the people he has chosen for his administration. It almost seems as if he deliberately and systematically sought out and chose the worst qualified and/or most corrupt people he could possibly find.

His wife does seem to be a basically decent person, though. Hopefully she can succeed in being a moderating influence on him.

In all these years, you have never written anything to which I had a visceral reaction. Well tonight was the night. You fell for a hook about the jewelry line, Gunnar, you really did. Look at her biography. Read through her accomplishments. If she's promoting her jewelry line, then she's promoting that long list of causes she's supported over the years. You cherry picked one line out of an entire biography and act like she's got a table set up in front of the White House hawking bracelets or something.

And not only that. Take a step back and look at how you just replied above. One line in the beginning about Melania Trump and most of the rest is about how you don't trust her husband. When Hillary was running, did you support the comments that disparaged her on account of Bill Clinton's affairs? No, because she was running for president, not him.

Same thing with Melania. Don't confuse her with her husband. She's not his appendage, she's a wealthy and accomplished woman. It's her jewelry business not his. It's her biography not his. Why would you trivialize her that way? Please do not cheapen her on account of your distrust of her husband. That is an elegant and accomplished woman there, Gunnar, not some cheap hooker being pimped out by her husband.

About Trump. I did listen to his speech on video and I appreciated it. I thought it was well delivered and inspiring. Whether or not he lives up to it, that's another story altogether, but I'm not going to push the panic button until he shows me it's time, and certainly not less than 24 hours into his term.

Okay at this point I'm just running off at the mouth. Settle down, because so far, the man hasn't done anything but talk.

You are a very nice person. Perhaps too nice.

Your are doing all the things normal people usually try to do when a political leader not to their taste takes power in a democratic country. They say things like "Well, he's sincere and thinks his policies will be good for the country. Let's give him time."

But this is not a normal president, separated from his political opponents by policy differences. Many Republicans as well as Democrats spoke the truth about him at a time when it seemed impossible that he should be elected: they pointed to his ignorance, his narcissism and his mendacity. They said explicitly that he was quite unfit for the office to which he aspired. His speech gave little reason for changing that view.

Well, you can hope that they were all wrong, I suppose. Good luck with that.

What other option do we have besides to give him time?

You don't have any options at all for the moment. You aren't giving him time. For the moment, the time and the options are all his. For the rest of us, it's just a question of not kidding ourselves.

Watch his every move, and don't be tempted to make allowances. This is a man who does not play by any rules or acknowledge any scruples on the path to power.

Well said, Chap!

I know. It doesn't matter if we are tempted to make allowances. They don't belong to us either.

Gunnar,

They changed the website entry regarding the jewelry line. Apparently it's not being sold anywhere any more. It was called, ‘Melania™ Timepieces & Jewelry,’ and I can find no evidence of it being sold online.

Better?

So yeah, Chapo, Hola! Bienvenido! Welcome to your new home. Mi casa es su casa, and all that jazz.

But don't even think about trying to escape, buddy. We're building a wall on our southern border just to keep you in!

"My house is my castle" simply means that i can do whatever i want to at my own home.
... and i (we) will do it
sorry, chapo, your future seems to be short

up to now i have thought the wall is anisotropic
"anisotropy /ˌænaɪˈsɒtrəpi/ is the property of being directionally dependent, which implies different properties in different directions"

then, not only those who speak mexican (copyright gwb) can not intrude to usa, but there will be no trespassers southwards?
