Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission 558 U.S. 310 (2010) is a U.S. constitutional law and corporate law case dealing with the regulation of campaign spending by organizations.
This incredibly disastrous decision by the Supreme Court, which in my opinion is at least as wrong headed, immoral and anti-democratic as the infamous Dred Scott decision, is what made it possible for organizations like the Koch Brothers and the fossil fuel industry, using "dark money" to buy out or intimidate the vast majority of Republican and even some Democratic politicians into denying or at least de-emphasizing the reality and danger of human caused climate change. It also greatly facilitated Russia's false news campaigns and hacking into our electoral process that helped insure the election of Trump.
In that speech and in his book, on which it is based,
he points out how before that disastrous Supreme Court decision, there was a lot of bipartisan acceptance of the reality of climate change, and bipartisan efforts to address and ameliorate those concerns. After that decision, the above mentioned, corporate interests had free rein to pour any amount of dark money they wanted to influence or intimidate, especially conservative, Republican politicians, into abandoning even the pretense of climate change concerns. The fake news and hacking networks and methods they created to spread their misinformation were eagerly taken advantage of by the Russians in influencing not only our election, but undermining the electoral processes of other democracies as well.
Whitehouse for President! After all, the presidential residence already has his name, doesn't it? Let's make it really official!
