Maybe this is a crazy idea, but I wouldn't be surprised if Russia was the original leak of the emails. I guess they've figured out by now that Trump is way too flawed to be useful to them, so feeding the current chaos would be a good alternative.

I've heard that rumor as well, but don't quite understand why they would do that. It's not like this absolves Jared.

I have heard that Trump loves it when his team fights with each other for dominance (supposedly that's the way Fred raised him as well). So I can understand Jared betraying Don Jr. What I don't understand is why he would do so when he's at risk at well (and arguably at higher risk due to his security clearance issues).

I think the idea is that Kushner's legal team got a hold of it, and someone in that orbit then leaked it to the press. The intent of the leaker might not have been to be helpful to Kushner.

Speaking of which, Kushner's latest defense of failing to disclose Russian contacts on his security clearance form is that a staffer accidentally clicked send before it was completed.

Adoption was just a small addendum to the purpose of the Magnitsky Act. The full intent of the act was for vengeance against the corruption of political insiders (Putin's cronies). Natalia Veselnitskaya was a lawyer representing the corrupt insiders who did not want to be touched by this act. Most likely repealing the Magnitsky Act was mentioned as a quid pro quo item in exchange for the information. Probably a swift agreement as made as well as the decision by both sides to release the hacked emails through Wikileaks and the fake news stories in order to promote the Trump campaign. The "adoption claim" was a spin to mitigate against the real intent of the meeting.

I have trouble deciding what amazes me the most: 1. that despite Trump's, by now, extremely well established and still growing reputation for pathological lying, he still expects his Republican base to unwaveringly support and trust him, or that, 2. so far, that expectation still seems to be holding true.

Closing off American adoption of Russian children was Russia's retaliation for the Magnitsky act. Obviously, if you're talking about Russian adoption, you're talking about US sanctions in that context. US citizens' desire to adopt Russian babies never struck me as all that significant of a bargaining chip, but it apparently means something to some people.

One of the things that is suspicious around the meeting is there was a flurry of references to releasing hacked emails from Clinton's personal email server right after the meeting occurred. Yet that never happened. It's natural to wonder what is up with that.

DNC email hacks were later released. So were Clinton's campaign manager's. Neither of those hacks contained anything all that problematic, but they were quite effectively used by Republican campaigners to influence media coverage negatively towards Clinton and provided fertile ground for fake news stories regarding Clinton pulsing through social media. The Russian hacks all by themselves were useless. It took American political expertise and media incompetence to make them damage Clinton.

If Clinton's personal server emails leaked, that could've been a different ballgame because it would've necessarily proved the server was vulnerable to attack and fed into the main line of attack against Clinton that was dominating news coverage. But if a nation like Russia did crack that server and get her State department emails, I'm sure that has intelligence value unto itself and they'd be laying some serious cards on the table if they leaked them.
