Is there something about the 14th Amendment you don't understand?

It's not a problem of the Supreme Court's making. It's a line drawing exercise -- defining the boundaries of rights in the real world. It's inherent in any system of rights. Cases that are closest to the line are always hard cases.
“The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the dedicated communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists.”

This issue exists for any public accommodation law such as forcing someone to offer legal services without discrimination with respect to race even if there is a religious objection. This isn't a new problem created by sexual orientation based discrimination. People can religiously object to anything.

Anti-discrimination laws do help to reduce discrimination and help prevent things getting out of control.
