Tax Cut and Jobs Bill gets immediate positive response

Post by _Bach »

AT&T gives huge $200 million bonus to its employees as a result of the passage of “Tax Cut and Jobs Bill” today:

Surprised that the passage of this bill isn’t get much discussion here. Is it because of the inherent nature between paying taxes, actually being employed and the demographics of most posters here?

Did you even watch the video in your link? This is clearly an attempt to bribe Trump since AT&T is in the middle of a heated battle with the Justice Dept. Even the Russians and Chinese understand that no one responds to flattery more than Trump.

The odd thing about this bragging is the PR move is well short of the promised effects of the debt financed cuts. Maybe if it was closer to a billion in broad based salary raises it would be a notable corporate response to the tax change. That would be an isolated case involving a mega corp trying to curry government favor, but if it was part of a broad trend then that really would be news.

In other words, that's 200,000 people who can now renovate their kitchen, or buy a new car.

Seriously though, despite their motives, and how embarrassingly paltry that is compared to their dividend payouts or executive compensation, that's going to make a huge difference in a lot of people's lives. An unexpected $1000 windfall can really help alleviate some financial stresses.

Good too see you getting some rest from a hard day's driving, friend. God bless you.

You'll note from the article:

AT&T had about $16.5 billion in capital expenditures in 2017.

In Wednesday's announcement, AT&T noted its track record of creating U.S. jobs. Earlier this year, thousands of AT&T workers, members of the Communications Workers of America union, went on strike over issues like job security and outsourcing. Many AT&T workers already expected to receive 10 percent raises and $1,000 lump-sum back wages as a result of an agreement announced last week.

Also:

AT&T stands to be a potential beneficiary of another recent move by the Trump administration: the repeal of net neutrality regulation.

I'd tease you about not reading your source material, but we need you to stay focused on the road and keeping all of us good Americans safe while out on the highway. Take care, buddy.

EA and KG, what did either of you do for your employees this holiday season to make their lives better than a $1,000 family contribution. Come on guys - do something other than indirectly complain that you’re whole life is a message board. Can you not see how embarrassing it would be to your wife and children if they knew what you did all day?

Dealing with the increased deficit?

That comes later, I suppose.

$1000 is a decent Christmas bonus but the company I previous worked for gave their hourly workers annual Christmas bonuses that ranged between $800-$3000 depending on seniority with the company. I do know that AT&T's union workers are very well paid with tremendous job security and benefits. So I'm just curious what their usual Christmas bonus was prior to this announcement.

I’ll make a contribution to you, Bach. It would be tax advantageous of you to participate in the 401(k) plan you offer your employees. Let me know if you’d like me to explain to you the advantages of tax-deferred savings—in short, it means more money in your pocket, which you could use to create jobs!

I would normally think a business owner such as yourself would know such a basic thing, as such people shrewdly look for ways to minimize their tax bills. But apparently, you missed this neat tax-savings trick since you said in that other post that you don’t participate in your 401(k) plan.

Son, you are way out of your league here. Why would anyone invest in capital assets through a 401 K? HELLO!

That’s why folks on this board need to seek out financial advice from people other than KG and EA!!!

Don’t have time for your needed tax/finance class on in this forum! You really are ignorant about investing and financial planning son.
