Oprah 2020

Post by _Some Schmo »

I doubt it would happen (I don't think she'll run), but if she did and won, man... that would be justice to Drumpf voters. It would make a lot of them (more) insane.

I'd vote for her for that reason alone. It would be a snow storm of snowflakery and tears from the right wingnut world, just like the Obama years.

ETA: Plus, ya know... it'd be nice to have an adult running the White House again.

I have mixed feelings about it. Opera Winfrey vs. Donald Trump for President? That sounds like a bad novel.

But on the other hand, unlike Trump Winfrey is a bona fide self-made billionaire. If we really want somebody in the white house with real executive experience and who really is stable and really is a genius, Winfrey is on a short list of qualified candidates.

And on the plus side, if she wins you know what will happen?

So, you'd eat a crap sandwich just to make them smell your breath.

Yep. Welp. There you go. US politics.

I've had to endure yours. It's only fair.

Although I wouldn't necessarily consider Oprah for President a crap sandwich, but whatever. Your unsurprising opinion is of little consequence.

I hear you. I'm not exactly an Oprah fan, but if it's a contest between her and Drumpf, it's no contest at all. I don't mind her as a person, although admittedly, she does have some questionable ideas.

But her ideas are questionable within the realm of normal (as opposed to Drumpf, who's questionable as an American and as a human being).

There you have it, folks. This guy eats crap for breakfast. He just admitted it.

In all seriousness, I hate that this is a thing. I hate it more than I hate the notion Democrats and progressives should take a page from the conservative propaganda machine to manipulate voters in similar ways.

I know very little about Oprah, and what I know comes from the collective conscious of being an American. I've never watched her show, read her magazine, etc. I can't judge her fitness to be President based on any criteria other than her background as an entertainer and businessperson. And that resume alone disqualifies her, in my opinion.

I DO know that Trump has effectively left generations of accrued institutional knowledge that make up the workings of our government to dry on the vine in the name of draining the swamp. It's been estimated the damage done by his team not taking their jobs seriously or being unqualified for their jobs could put us back a generation.

Choosing a celebrity for President yet again, even the most intelligent and well meaning, is such a ridiculous gamble as the follow-up to the Trump presidency it's difficult to conceive a way to conceptualize just how radically and permanently it could alter the foundational mechanics of the executive branch. Maybe it could be compared to having a thug take over the cockpit of an airplane in flight, shoot the qualified pilots in the head and then rant about how terrible professional pilots are. And following the rational wrestling down and removal of the thug from the cockpit, turning down the offers to fly the plane by people with experience in flying planes because a popular NASCAR driver who has never flown before is onboard and raised their hand.

Good god, people. It's damned insanity.

I don't entirely disagree, but I just have to reiterate: if it's a choice between her and Drumpf, it's no contest. The biggest difference right off the bat is that Oprah listens and acts on advice. And she's an adult, not a petulant man-child. I could name several other ways in which she'd be better, but you get the idea.

But yeah, there are several people I'd prefer, people with actual governing experience. What a concept!

No, if we elect another entertainer I don't know what I'd do but it isn't an option to play along like there are lesser evils on the table. The game is screwed at that point, time to cash out. At that point it isn't about ideologies or whether the person occupying the White House is marginally an adult. We've moved on from doing democracy in an adult way as a society at that point.
