"You're never going to get rid of guns"

Post by _Some Schmo »

You're never going to get rid of guns is something I hear/read a lot from people when discussing the issue, like it's a foregone conclusion that the US attitude toward guns is intractable, and if there's one thing one generation or Americans after another will always manically cling to, it's their guns.

Here's something to ponder - even two years ago, did anyone think right wingers would be cool with foreign interference in our political system, especially from Russia?

I think many of these people are more malleable than we might imagine.

Besides, if congress suddenly bowed to pressure and decided to ban guns, what would happen? Are all these fat asses going to rise up as a coherent, organized group against the US government and take on the military? Under General Ted Nugent?

Seriously, what would happen if the US government tried to ban guns? I personally think it would have all the same fanfare and useless panic people had over the turn of the millennium. Remember what a disappointment it was when Jesus never showed and all the computers still worked? It was just another day.

There would be widespread terrorism. I'm sure of it.

I don't know, man. You think there are that many people willing to die for their guns?

There are that many latent neoConfederates, neoDanites and neoNazis, yes. Have you read The Turner Diaries?

A thinning of that herd might be a good thing (semi-joking there).

No. Is it good?

Doubleplusungood. Reading it is like bathing in acid. But it gives you an indispensable insight into a certain type of American. Tim McVeigh loved it and sold it at gun shows.

A Mormon produced his own version. Yeah, he died fighting the gummint too.

I'm absolutely positive you'd have tens of thousands of gun nuts agitating either for an outright insurrection or for seceding. Possibly more. You underestimate how much guns and rifles mean to millions of Americans who are absolutely willing to support people who are absolutely willing exact violence on other Americans to maintain their 2nd Amendment rights.

Perhaps I do.

It's not really serious or plausible. Hypothetically it would cause a serious amount of violence as many on the far right would try and take over the government. It's just not realistic. Even if democrats won all three house by a lot they would never ban all guns, nor do they need to in order to lower levels of violence and deaths closer to what we see in places like Canada. Even in Canada one can buy an AR-15, but the rules are far more strict resulting in a lot less of these kind of weapons and they are used and stored in much safer ways. If a country like Canada is not going to ban all guns, what chance is there the US will?
