NRA: The Official Airline of the State of Georgia

From The New York Times:
ATLANTA — Georgia lawmakers approved a bill on Thursday that stripped out a tax break proposal highly coveted by Delta Air Lines — the most stinging punishment that America’s pro-gun forces have leveled so far on one of the many corporations recalibrating their positions on firearms after the Florida high school massacre.

The $50 million sales tax exemption on jet fuel that was sought by Delta, one of Georgia’s biggest employers, had been included in a broader tax-relief bill. But this week, a number of Georgia Republicans, including Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, sought to remove the perk as retribution for Delta’s decision to end a promotional discount for members of the National Rifle Association.

Guess how many people took advantage of the NRA discount with Delta?

13

So for failure to continue a marketing plan that had netted Delta 13 customers, the Georgia legislature is in essence, fining Delta airline tens of millions of dollars. When did the State of Georgia become the arbiter of marketing campaign discounts?

It gets even more bizarre: A Georgia Senator justifying the legislation made the claim that Delta offered discounts to Planned Parenthood members. When asked about the source of information on CNN, the Senator said he looked it up on Google.

Delta does not offer a discount to Planned Parenthood.

And the State Senator who made this statement (Michael Williams) is running for Governor.

Good times ahead, Kevin.

The GOP truly has become a party of complete lunacy.

The past week I have walked past booths for the Campus Republicans. It baffles me that anyone with an IQ north of 80 is still a member of that party.

But then I realize that being amoral or insane is not dependent on IQ.

Seriously, I don't understand why it is that anyone with two neurons firing remains Republican. Such folks really need a new party. One that doesn't stand for unapologetically kleptocratic values.

Try this:

Google delta discount planned parenthood

Now tell me what facts you find to substantiate the Senator's claim.

Nothing? Too much information about how the claim is fake? Let's go back before the incident. Do the same search from January 1, 2017 to Feb. 15, 2018:

Please show me how you find credible information that Planned Parenthood members get a discount from Delta.

Are you deliberately trying to give lunacy a bad reputation?

This post (minus the campus experience) is a script that seems to run over and over again in my head.

I honestly don't get it either, Kish, but I guess neither of us is invested in the right-wing tribe, so we don't spend time executing the mental gymnastics it would take to remain Republican.

One of my Republican friends is upfront about not liking Drumpf, but the Supreme Court pick was too important. Abortion is worse than everything Drumpf represents, apparently.

I wonder how the reversal of Roe vs Wade is coming, anyway.

So, telling other people how to live their lives with regard to abortion is simply too important to worry about anything else. I can almost respect that. I don't like abortion either. I can't think about it for too long without getting sick to my stomach.

The thing is: it's not any of my damned business what another person chooses in the matter of something so intensely private.

I used to belong to the tribe. I once voted straight Republican. I used to argue with "liberals," beginning in high school. In school debates, I used to choose to argue the anti-gun control position.

The thing is: I didn't know crap at the time. I look back at my old self with a mixture of embarrassment and horror. Not because I was Republican, but because I mouthed off a lot without knowing much of anything.

Now, I voted Republican through 2000. I started to drift a little more toward the center over time. But it was the Iraq War and the Religious Right that eventually did me in.

These days there is no way I could return to voting GOP. That is truly a party that has jumped the shark. I don't see any way back. I could not in good conscience vote for anyone who has lived through these times and not seen how truly horrific, how vile, how treasonous, how utterly bankrupt the GOP has become. If a person could live through this and stay in the party or continue to vote in favor of those who run as Republicans, then that person has lost all credibility in my mind.

If a person does not see how vile, ignorant, and destructive the GOP is, they at the very least have proven they are clueless, lack curiosity, and think very little about important issues. Maybe the person is intensely tribal. In any case, I don't see an acceptable excuse.

Well, people can always claim they like being selfish pricks with no regard for humanity. There's an excuse.

Oh wait, you said an acceptable excuse. Yeah, I got nothing.
