So this just happened. I have a gmail account that I use for only one thing so my experience with this is limited.

I got this email telling me that someone tried to log into my account using my password. So...I go through the steps and find this thing with a map with the location on it.

What is that exactly? I changed my password, but what is that? I'm not asking what an IP address is. I'm asking what you guys think happened here and why it happened. What's this activity about?

Thanks...

Does not look good, Jersey Girl.

Scroll all the way to the bottom of your Google inbox. On the lower right-hand corner, click on the word 'details'. A box should pop up showing you the ip addresses from the last 10 logins for your account. If you do not recognize them, you have some problems.

I would think about changing all of your passwords. Think about using a service like LastPass. Some people recommend a Virtual Private Network.

I'll change all my passwords. I'm sure what you're telling me is that once someone has gotten my password on an account I don't even use, they can use it to hop into other accounts.

Thanks. I hate my life right now.

It's a effed up world with a lot of thieves.

LastPass is like PayPal for your passwords: You have an online fault that stores and remembers all of your passwords. The only password you have to remember is your password to LastPass. Once you have it set up, you can have automatically change your passwords every X number of days. It will generate alpha/numeric passwords with keyboard symbols that are difficult to remember and crack. But again, all you do is remember you LastPass password.

A word of caution: LastPass does not work inside a lot of large educational networks and places with their own password requirements. But it works seamlessly on most websites.

I no longer have educational institution passwords. I do however, have a long list of passwords, all of which are different and the majority of them memorized. I'll be spending time changing them over tonight...starting with my banking password. I checked my bank accounts immediately after I switched the password as per the email alert. I'll check out LastPass and see if I want to use it.
