Michael Cohen running out of cash?

Cohen is letting his legal team go. There are questions about billing, but supposedly during all of the document discovery process of the last few weeks the legal tab has been around $130,000 per week. That is a lot of Taxi medallions, especially in the age of Uber and Lyft.

When the history of this saga is written, this will be the 'long dark night of the soul' moment for Michael Cohen. Does he Trump will pardon him? He's betting decades of his life on it. Is anyone making a back door communication from Trump to Cohen? Is he waiting for some contact, some sign? Michael Cohen is slowly being evicted from his former life. There will never be a rapprochement. He will not be Trump's fixer anymore. All that 'consulting' money is all dried up.

Michael Cohen is watching the walls close in. A lot of people say it's inevitable that he will flip. It would be the rational decision at this point. Michael Cohen has built his life on loyalty. How much is he willing to pay to remain loyal?

He's going through a rought patch. Couldn't happen to a more deserving guy.

Stephen Colbert suggested Cohen is about to make a deal unless Trump grants him a pardon.

I'm confused. How can Trump grant him a pardon when he hasn't been convicted yet?

My understanding is that he can't be pardoned for state convictions, only federal, which was why his case was referred to state prosecutors.

But this is the kind of legal mumbo jumbo that I'm easily confused by, so I could be mistaken.

He hasn't run out of rich friends but he's running out of ones who want to be associated with him. Nobody wants to be investigated. He's become toxic unless somehow this all just "goes away". And if you don't think that can happen, let me refer you to the Iran-Contra affair.

I think this news story is too opaque to really know what is going on here. Everyone knows, though some pretend not to know, that Cohen has incriminating knowledge about Trump. Preventing the threat of him flipping is worth an awful lot of money to people who have an awful lot of money. So something goofy probably is going on there that we don't know about.

Since speculation is all we have right now I was wondering if there might have been something so toxic in the seized communication (isn't the deadline on their review of it this week) that they were sorting through that may have caused his legal team to decide to step away. It could also be that the legal team was only going to cover him if he didn't turn or conversely, their recommendation may be to cooperate and Cohen doesn't want to so they will cut their loses. You're probably correct that money isn't the real issue here.

Lots of folks are confused by this. The referral was to federal prosecutors in New York, not state prosecutors. Under current New York law, a pardon for federal crimes would bar prosecution for at least some related state crimes.
