Rhames said it was about 2:15 in the afternoon when he heard a knock on the front door.

“I open the door and there is a red dot pointed at my face from a 9 millimeter,” he said. “They say, ‘Put up your hands,’ literally.”

According to Rhames, he was confronted by three police officers, the captain of police and a police dog.

Black burglars, of course, always open the front door politely when the police knock on the door. They're nicely brought up people. They quite understand when they find a laser bead is drawn on them the minute they look out of the door and they are told to reach for the sky. Only householders get upset about that kind of thing, 'cos they don't have the training that burglars get, which teaches them that, well, that's just the way police normally come calling when black people are in the house.

The lesson is don't be a racist prick who assumes a large black man wouldn't be able to afford such a house. Or at the very least, get to know your damned neighbors.

“Here I am in my own home, alone in some basketball shorts just because someone called and said a large black man is breaking in,” Rhames said. “When I opened up the wooden door, a 9 millimeter is pointed at me. My problem is ... what if it was my son and he had a video game remote or something, and you thought it was a gun?”

Of course, Republicans don't think in these terms.

This is just one of the many examples of daily life white people never have to deal with. White privilege at work again. Racist neighbors, probably a transient from Georgia.

But... liberty and justice for all, eh?

If this had happened in South Carolina or Tennessee, the outcome could have been tragically different. A man in his own home, or worse, a teenage son playing laser tag with his brother and both getting murdered right there on the spot for simply opening the door.
