As a white boy growing up in the 60's, there were a couple of great voices that let you into soul: Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye come to mind. For me, Aretha was one of those voices. Queen of Soul.

What was amazing is that she remained so relevant throughout the years. My first real exposure to her (apart from anything greatest hit related) was
"A Rose Is Still A Rose" in '98.

She was certainly deserved to be near the top of anyone's list of greatest vocalists, especially in her genre of music.
