Fox news reports "California is proposing to legislate what drinks restaurants can serve your kids, only giving two options: milk or water." — Fox News Channel on Sunday, August 19th, 2018 in California. Which is fact checked by politifact
https://www.politifact.com/california/s ... ids-meal-/I think the government needs to do more to fight childhood obesity. It is child abuse for parents to let their children consume a lot of sugar. It is criminal, our moral standards need to change.

It seems like a perfectly sensible bill to me, and places no restraints on anyone's freedom to choose what their children get to drink at a restaurant. A number of restaurants probably already observe that rule anyway.

But you know there will be parents outraged that their kids can't have all the sugar they want. That's the right's version of freedom. Although you can't have an abortion, you can always poison your kids with sugar.

This looks like worthless piece of legislation to me.

Did you even read the bill? There's nothing remotely effective about it. It's useless window dressing intended to generate income for the state.
It certainly doesn't represent the government fighting childhood obesity.

If it "places no restraints on anyone's freedom to chose what their children get to drink at a restaurant" then what is the purpose of the bill itself other than generating income for the state via fines and penalties for restaurants who don't change their menus?
That's really the only thing this bill does, Gunnar.
It's about changing menus, not changing children's health.

Let me be crystal clear. The only thing this bill does is force restaurants to change their menus, drop beverages from the children's menu offerings so that parents are free to choose any darn drink they want their children to have. Under this bill, parents are already free to choose crap drinks for their children. The one and only change is how the menus are presented and printed.
If CA wants to fight childhood obesity, it should make nutrition education part of student science curriculum, make changes in the school lunch menu, and restore recess as part of the daily schedule.
But that's too hard, you see. Instead the state is happy to make it appear as though they're committed to fighting childhood obesity to a gullible public that is only too happy to hog it down like they hog down Big Macs.

You are right! It is sad the government isn't doing much to fight obesity.

Try checking your state statutes and see if they have any requirements (not suggestions) for recess for students. I would venture a guess that most states have no recess policy at all these days.
Outside time addresses both physical and mental health, as well as social development. (Among other things).
Our students aren't getting what they need where they work 5 days a week. I see no reason for gov't to attempt to regulate what they drink (with no attention to what's on their plate) when they visit a restaurant.
This is primarily a parent's responsibility. Not the gov't. We have access to nutrition labeling on all of our food products including restaurant menus. It's not the government's job to make us eat healthy.
Anyway, all the above bill does is force restaurants to reprint their menus. That's it.

McDonald's removed soda from their kid's meals in 2013.
