I'm not sure what Sinead's politics are but I'm assuming feminism mixed with something left of center. She demonstrated her disdain for Catholicism ripping up a photo of the pope on SNL.

I don't fully comprehend the love affair between the left and Islam. Most I've spoken with view Lilburn Boggs extermination order as a fair response to the Mormon practice of polygamy. Yet they seem to identify so tightly with a religion that practices polygamy today as well as requiring women to wear hijabs, forbidding them from driving etc. Is polygamy the real reason leftists hate Mormons or is it something else? If it is why not the same outrage over Muslims practicing polygamy?

I think you have to do a little more work on showing a left wing love affair with Islam than a single celebrity convert to Islam. Most of the left wing, or more accurately not right wing, defense of Islam I see is just counter bigotry rather than pro Islam. You don’t exactly see a rush of Sinead O’Connors do you?

O’Connor was a dissident Catholic at one point. What she ripped up the photo of John Paul II over was Church sex abuse. She was kinda ahead of her time on that, which is appalling when you think about it.

Islam isn’t a Church and she wasn’t Muslim at the time. This is a very confused post. John Paul II was the head of an organization systematically covering up rape of children by its employees and getting away with it. I think it’s fine to condemn that. That doesn’t make you anti-Christian. It doesn’t even necessarily make you anti-Catholic.

If Islam isn't a Church, how do you convert to Islam? Who and what are you following? Is it just a personal interpretation of the Koran? Does Islam have any hierarchy or modern doctrine?

I mean Muhammad screwed a kid. So. You know. Maybe O'Connor could, I don't know, who knows. There is SO MUCH sex abuse within Islam that any sort of equivalence with Christian sex abuse scandals dovetails nicely.

If she's happy being a Muslim, more power to her. I don't get it, but if she feels submitting herself to it is her path, who am I to say she's wrong?

Not helpful. I genuinely don't know much about Islam, doctrine, governing authorities, etc. Just curious.

I just don't quite understand how people so offended by sexism they see in Mormonism can be so tolerant, accepting, even joining up with Islam? Is it just a case of rooting for the political underdog?

Imagine asking this question of Christianity, then trying to answer it. There are Islamic religious organizations like the Catholic Church is one, and a 1:1 comparison would be her ripping up the photo of an Imam overseeing something like The Catholic Church sex abuse issue.

I think it's a HUGE mistake for the Left to align with Islamic organizations. There's a real object lesson in it for Leftists, a.k.a. the Islamic Revolution in Iran. Leftists there aligned with Islamists to depose the Shah, but they ended up getting murdered in the tens of thousands once the Islamists began their purges.

Not a smart move, man.
