Can someone explain the media's love affair with "Beto" to me?
We've got a congressman challenging a one term republican senator who is successful and generally well liked within the state. His qualifications? He has a degree in English from Columbia. He used to be in a band. He has DUIs and burglary arrests. Which I don't particularly care about, but it's part of his resume nonetheless. He's a white irish guy that goes by the name Beto to make people think he's hispanic. He learned Spanish apparently. Cool.
After college he worked as a live in nanny, mover, and other random jobs. Then with family they started some web page design shop in el paso, or something. I have no desire to disparage anybody's small business, but look at their website and judge for yourself. If he gets enough work building little crappy web pages for local businesses in el paso, and he can feed his family doing this, good for him. But what about this qualifies him to serve Texas in the senate?
I mean the media is just obsessed with him. He's raised $70 million dollars. Record setting. Why? Murals going up all over the place. Beto signs and stickers everywhere. I've gotten at least a dozen text messages from him personally. Not a single one from Cruz, even though I'm a registered republican. Beto is all over the national news. I mean there are even articles about Beto reacting to articles about Beto!
On the other hand, John James. West Point graduate, BS. Military vet. MS from Penn State, and MBA from U of Michigan. Founder and CEO of a small business, a logistics company in Detroit. Not a huge company or anything. But it's a real business compared to what Beto's got going on. Multiple locations, dozens of employees. A number of awards for growing small businesses, African American business leadership, etc., in Detroit area. Oh yeah, he's black. And he didn't run off to some other state/city where his credentials could easily command a nice living. He has chosen to stay in Detroit and try to rebuild it.
How does James get treated by these same people who adore Beto? Stuff like this...
