Bolsonaro wins Brazil

Don't know anything about the guy, but...
Far-right lawmaker Jair Bolsonaro won Brazil's presidential election on Sunday, riding a wave of frustration over corruption and crime that brought a dramatic swing to the right in the world's fourth-largest democracy.

Speaks like a fascist. Says he would beat the gay out of a gay son if he had one. Is a misogynist, racist, homophobe, and a climate change denier. Says he is going to open up protected wilderness reserves and tribal lands to resource extraction. Talks nostalgically about the good old days of the military dictatorship.
You'd like him.
Brazil had something shy of 500 murders last year of gay folk, for being gay. I expect that number to go up.

The world's gonna burn if we don't get a handle on authoritarian movements gaining ground in democracies all over the globe. Once they get a foothold on power, they set about rigging the system to maintain it. Democracy is a means to an anti-democratic end.

I know, right? If only a Democrat who respects the Constituion would consider running in 2020 to keep these fascists out of power... I sure hope it's not the guy who wrote the Patriot Act or introduced to counterrorism omnibus in the 90's or wrote the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act! How absolutely untrustworthy is a guy who voted for the Iraq War, you know? Surely the Left wouldn't have trusted him as the second in command for eight years.
But at least a Democrat, despite crapping all over the 4th Amendment and voting for a war that had nothing to do with 9/11 isn't a corporate shill! I mean except for the corporations in Delaware, like... I dunno... MBNA, a credit card company that got him to change the law regarding an '05 bill declaring bankruptcies can no longer cover student loans and credit card debt! I'm sure a guy like him would find spending his free time hobnobbing with corporate elites on, say, Nantucket island too bourgeoisie since Democrats fight for the little guy.
Well, at least Democrats don't cover for sexual deviants like Trump and the dirty GOP does! Unless it's major political player who screwed his own toddler, but was spared jail with the help of connected Democrats because jail might be hard on him.
Yeah, those bastards on the Right are some really scary people!

Yes, Joe Biden, someone I'm notoriously a fan of what with the frequently expressed intense dislike and all, is the same as someone who, er, advocates for the torture and jail of political opponents. No daylight between those figures in understanding authoritarian threat.
Kinda weird of you to repeatedly play up what a staunch Democrat you are while making unfavorable comparisons to fascist-like authoritarians. With friends like you, I suppose. I know your implied opinion is that idea that international resurgence of authoritarian movements, including the one in the United States, is actually much ado about nothing, but it's really not and condescension and false equivalence doesn't change that fact.

Incidentally, if you're gonna complain about Biden's authoritarian tendencies, which as bad as they aren't don't even begin to ballpark Trump's Republican party, you really need to to give more attention to his role in ratcheting up the drug war and its attendant civil rights abuses. He's one of the worst political figures in our country's history on that front. A thread that has run through his entire political career is a desire to expand police power and the most significant manifestation of this is his role in writing and sponsoring some truly atrocious laws aimed at drug control. He's offered a semi-mea culpa on some of this, but it's a pretty shameful record.

Yep, he's all that and more. He is frequently caught on camera admitting he's a moron on the subject of important things like economics. He once said he'd prefer his son be killed in a car accident, than be gay. He told a female in Congress he wouldn't rape her because she doesn't deserve it.
And his minions support him no matter what, calling all of these facts about him, "fake news." It really blows my mind the similarities between them and Trump supporters. Steelhead and I have many Brazilian friends on Facebook, and I'm having to block a lot of them because I'm sick and tired to waking up to idiotic images of him dressed up like the Messiah, the savior of Brazil. It distresses me to no end knowing I have friends and family who uncritically worship this guy.
Having said that, many folks who support him don't like his comments either. But Brazil has been run neck deep in corruption and controlled by the PT political party for so long that they're just wanting an alternative to break the cycle I think.
Oh, and he wants to legalize guns in Brazil.
