Shooting Victim? Nope. Negligent Killer.

Post by _honorentheos »

Here's a story from the fringe of the abortion debate:

https://www.al.com/news/birmingham/2019 ... issed.html

Y'all remember those slippery slope arguments againsy marriage equality leading to a blank check for depraved behavior? Guess conservatives were just projecting how they refuse to allow reasonable judgement have a seat at the table.

From the link -

A woman whose unborn baby was killed in a 2018 Pleasant Grove shooting has now been indicted in the death.

Marshae Jones, a 27-year-old Birmingham woman, was indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury on a manslaughter charge. She was taken into custody on Wednesday.

Though Jones didn’t fire the shots that killed her unborn baby girl, authorities say she initiated the dispute that led to the gunfire. Police initially charged 23-year-old Ebony Jemison with manslaughter, but the charge against Jemison was dismissed after the grand jury failed to indict her.

...

“The investigation showed that the only true victim in this was the unborn baby,’’ Pleasant Grove police Lt. Danny Reid said at the time of the shooting. “It was the mother of the child who initiated and continued the fight which resulted in the death of her own unborn baby.”

...

The 5-month fetus was "dependent on its mother to try to keep it from harm, and she shouldn’t seek out unnecessary physical altercations,” Reid added.

Jones will be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail where she will be held on $50,000 bond.

The indictment and prosecution is being handled by the Jefferson County Bessemer Cutoff District Attorney’s Office. Lynneice Washington, the district attorney in that office, could not be reached for comment. Jefferson County is divided into two divisions and the Bessemer Cutoff covers the western portion of the county, including Pleasant Grove.

So... Shooting someone who is pregnant resulting in the death of the fetus isn't a crime? But being a mother who starts an altercation that results in being shot and losing the baby is? Wow.

You know I only read the headline on this earlier and couldn't believe it. Thanks for covering it.

I still can't believe it.

Now if we could criminalize miscarriages, we could finally disabuse women of the notion that they can avoid any sperm cell that floats their way. Perhaps Roy Moore has found a campaign issue for his next race. The Handmaid's Tale in Dixie.

Some states have done so, sort of. Any miscarriage in those states can trigger a criminal investigation, with charges brought if the investigators believes it was intentional. It’s not a stretch from that to basing criminal charges on failing to meet some legal standard for pre-natal health. Take that folate, ladies, or serve some hard time.

Does anyone know if Pleasant Grove police Lt. Danny Reid is white? Because I feel like I'm getting a vibe on this.

I tried googling with no luck.

Evangelicals unreasonably want to push the abortion line to the point of conception. The Republicans need to abandon these nuts, but who else would vote for them? I hope the poor woman charged gets a good criminal lawyer because this case might go for a while. She shouldn't be forced to plea to this nonsense.

What does the color of his skin have to do with anything?
