Im guessing that its because the inept education system of Australia neglected to teach its citizens basic logic, critical thinking, and the fallacy of confusing correlation and causation.

Some of the cheapest food is also the junkiest and most high calorie.

All of those southern states have a culture of deep frying and overeating junk (freeeee-dumb). When you go to a restaurant, unless they come out with a plate at least twice the size of any normal meal, customers feel ripped off. One meal is easily in excess of a person's daily needed calorie intake, and you don't see people skipping meals that often.
I worked in Alabama once for 5 months early in my career, and I believe I gained around 40 pounds in that time (what a joy that was to lose). I had to abandon the "clean your plate" mentality I was taught growing up in a poor family, because eating in restaurants everything they give you is a sure ticket to obesity.

It’s complicated. Richer countries tend to have more obesity than poor ones. The US is wealthy and has a comparatively high obesity rate. But within the US, obesity is associated with poverty. Poverty is also associated with consumption of processed, calorie-dense foods as well as a sedentary lifestyle. It’s difficult to tease out the causation.

In Australia our healthcare system is such that you get 3 free visits to a dietitian and and 3 free to an exercise physiologist. Notice in the US obesity goes up as you age.

I'm 6'3" 232 lbs, but I've never been called fat. I am however, surrounded by Rednecks from Hell. If I had a nickel for every time I saw an obese, pasty looking dude trying to hide his laziness behind a lumberjack beard and tattoo, I'd have enough to pay for your sex change operation. Most of these people are the quintessential hicks. Driving pickup trucks with a half dozen bumper stickers relating to Trump. I see it quite literally every day.

The dietician and exercise consults are only as good as they way in which they are put to use.
Are you by any chance implying that Australia does not have an obesity problem? Because if you are, I think you better check those states.
