Let's invade Greenland!

Post by _MeDotOrg »

I don't know about you, but I am sick and tired of Denmark disrespecting our President. All he wanted to do was buy an autonomous part of Denmark, and the effing Danes won't sell! Don't they understand our President is a real estate mogul? They should be honored that President Trump wants to make Greenland part of the Trump empire. Only 65,000 people on the island, so who cares what they want?

So cancelling the meeting with Denmark is the least the President should do. Why not invade? Greenland has no military. Piece of cake. And why we're at it, why not invade Denmark, and liberate the citizens from that socialist hell-hole? (For some reason, the Danes consistently rank their country as one of the happiest countries on earth.)

Seriously? When the reports of Trump's interest in Greenland first surfaced, I rolled my eyes, but then I thought "You're just overreacting." After all, Denmark sold the Virgin Islands to the U.S., and Harry Truman explored the possibility of buying Greenland. But when Denmark said no to Trump, he cancels a trip in a fit of pique. The man has the emotional maturity of a 12 year old boy.

I'm curious if anyone thinks that cancelling his meeting with the Danes was a rational response to the situation.

You’re far too generous, both in your estimation of his emotional maturity and in calling him a man.

Trump is definitely a whack job. What on earth is this Greenland thing about? Why would we want Greenland anyway? For the disappearing glaciers?

Why would he want Greenland? My best guess is so he could limit or deny access to scientists who are documenting the rapid melting of the Greenland Icecap that devastatingly supports the reality of the climate change that Trump desperately wants to convince the world is merely a Chinese hoax.
No precept or claim is more likely to be false than one that can only be supported by invoking the claim of Divine authority for it--no matter who or what claims such authority.

I'm hoping he's convincing himself right out of a job.

You could tell us why we need Greenland, then? Maybe you can liken it to our purchase of Alaska or something.

Just so you know ... basically Trump is starting a trade war with China, so is desperate to find another source for vital minerals. So then of course he promptly offends the best available convenient alternative suppliers ...

Why does Donald Trump want to buy Greenland?

Greenland harbours some of the largest deposits of rare-earth metals, including neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium, along with uranium and the byproducts of zinc.

US corporations once thought of China as a benign supplier of rare-earth metals for mobile phones, computers and more recently electric cars. And the US government was relaxed when Chinese companies began hoovering up mines across central and southern Africa to secure an even greater dominance of the global market.

The arrival of Xi Jinping as China’s leader, and his more aggressive foreign policy stance, has spooked many US policymakers. Among Trump’s advisers, the need for greater economic independence has raced up the agenda.

Greenland sits on a wealth of natural resources that are becoming exposed as the ice sheet recedes. Does Trump want Greenland for that reason? I don't know but it makes the most sense.

ETA just noticed Chaps news article says the same thing. Sorry, should have paid more attention.

In 1946 the US "secretly" offered $100m in gold to Denmark for Greenland as it was deemed a US military necessity ("the world's largest stationary aircraft carrier")... hmmm..how to link that to your Alaska thingy...hmmm
quick geography lesson for ya:

But you climate guys should recognize that Greenland ain't about mineral resources, but something waaaay waaaaay waaaaaaaaay more valuable....

But this all does relate to the new trade war with China, or a.k.a. the coming new and improved cold war (see also China's new spice road through Italy via bad economics of Italy, etc.)
