I wasn't optimistic that I would like it because I thought I had been burned out on the whole Gotham/Joker/Batman redos since Batman Begins.
But I highly recommend this film.

People whose taste I respect seem to like it a lot. I was more worried that it was going to be a second-rate Scorsese knockoff in the guise of a comic book film. The upshot is my expectations floor for that was somewhere around "meh."

Really? I didn't even care about Batman until Christopher Nolan got involved.

It was a good movie, far better than the Justice League.

Saw this last night. Really liked it, possibly the best mainstream movie I've seen in a while. I'd even call it a work of art. I'm impressed it's getting as much buzz and finding success given it's not action packed like a Batman movie, has a lot of inside baseball movie making going on that is usually found in more independent films, and relies almost entirely on Phoenix's acting making the audience uncomfortable for many different reasons to be able to pull off a satisfying ending. As my wife said, despite it being set in a particular time in US history (circa 1980) it isn't of that time period. I'm sure it has room for criticism (what movie doesn't?) but the fact it was more Winter's Bone meets The Network than The Dark Knight is a major plus, in my opinion. And yet, I'm pretty sure there were a couple of intentional well-executed homages to Heath Ledger's Joker in there, too.
